Ian Hartley is currently imprisoned on an IPP sentence in HMP Risley. He is suffering and vulnerable as a direct result of the barbarity of the IPP system. What follows is a letter that has been published with his permission – it gives us an idea about what daily life is for IPP prisoners. This first appeared on Smash IPP. There’s a content warning here for discussion of violence,… Continue reading
New spycop inquiry chair set to cover up names, warns watchdog
Researchers for the Campaign Opposing Police Surveillance (COPS) warned today that, following the first major release of papers by controversial new spycop inquiry chief Sir John Mitting, it looks like the Met may be successful in hiding the names of officers linked to their disgraced undercover operations team.
COPS has finished analysing a large release of papers by the Undercover Policing Inquiry following the recent release of three… Continue reading
Notes From the US
Louis Further’s monthly column for Freedom was written shortly before events in Charlottesville, where a white supremacist, allegedly Unite the Right supporter James Field, drove his car into a crowd of anti-fascists, killing one and injuring 19. The idea of driving cars through protesting crowds has become an increasingly popular fantasy in “alt-right” circles in recent years, and represents a major attempted escalation of far right violence in the… Continue reading
Hamburg mayor threatens radical sites as Berlin squat rallies against cop siege
Intense pressure is being put on German radical social centres in Hamburg and Berlin in the wake of last month’s G20 protests, with Hamburg’s mayor threatening Rote Flora and a round the clock siege of Teppichfabrik, which has prompted a solidarity rally in the capital today.
The gathering, in front of the squatted centre in Berlin’s Friedrichshain district, starts at 6pm (7pm GMT) will bring some relief… Continue reading
Teaching freedom: Thoughts on an anarchist education
Nearly everyone from across the political spectrum can agree that our current public education system in america is not ideal. Those on the statist left tend to fear that public education is under attack by private corporations and is completely underfunded. More progressive leftists go so far as to not only advocate for more funding for public grade school education but also higher education such as college, university, or graduate… Continue reading

Raising Hell opens this installment of Outspoken Authors (OA) with a doozy: union organisers, sentenced to Hell, unionise demons and eventually help Lucifer with his own identity crisis. Quality stuff. Punchy dialog. Guest appearances by Hoffa and Gompers. Fun commentary on religion. Explorations of Lucifer’s relationship with God. Tight writing moves this fun exploration out of… Continue reading
Argentina: Anarchist still missing after police raid against Mapuche activists
People were beaten, houses were burned, antique furniture burned, books were lost forever. Hurricane Gendarmerie went through the town of Cushamen last Monday causing devastation in the name of the Benetton fashion corporation, and one person is still missing — anarchist solidarity activist Santiago Maldonado.
Santiago, who lives in El Bolson, is more usually seen in Rio Library but has friends in Cushamen and had been… Continue reading
Solidarity and Empathy in the Summer of 2017
The idea that we are in competition with each other for resources is perhaps the most corrosive myth we’ve created. It damages our society like nothing else. The idea that we must beat someone to that house, a job, a lover or friendship is horrific. It reinforces and recreates the hierarchies that cause the contest in the first place. Over the last few days I’ve been frustrated to see examples… Continue reading

Greece: Karypidis supermarket worker commits suicide after 18 months without pay
The Thessaloniki Libertarian Initiative writes about the suicide of a worker in supermarket chain Karypidis, after 18 months in which the firm simply didn’t pay its staff salaries. A few days ago the initiative carried out a protest action outside one of the company’s supermarkets in Thessaloniki (above). This rally was the only collective reaction following the suicide-murder of the worker.
We will not become accustomed to death.… Continue reading
