WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE CZECH - news journal UPDATE - (en) Czech, CAS: EDUCATION IS A RIGHT! NOT A PRIVILEGE! (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

In 2001, the anarchist platform "Initiative for Free Education - IBV"

was formed in Slovakia, the aim of which was to organize together high
school students, university students, teachers and working parents to
oppose the neoliberal efforts of the then government to introduce
tuition fees at universities. In the end, the government withdrew from
the plan in view of the upcoming elections, and the prospective
initiative ended its activity because it was not needed. We present one
of the transcriptions of the IBV texts translated into Czech as an
inspiration. Following a similar model, a similar Initiative for free
education should be mobilized and formed with the cooperation of
anarchist and left-wing movements. TIME

EDUCATION IS A RIGHT! NOT A PRIVILEGE!
Today you are a student, tomorrow you are unemployed or if you are lucky
you get a job. But if you don't study law, economics, or another field
that will get you a relatively well-paid job, you have nothing to look
forward to - you can forget about starting a family, you'll barely
survive on your starting salary, and if you last 20-30 years, you might
live to pay off your debts and some comfort-if you don't get fired or
give up in the meantime.

UNDER PRESSURE
Unfortunately, we live in a society that is governed by the capitalist
free market and not by the needs of the people. Nevertheless, there are
still enough people who are willing to start studying something that no
longer gives them hope for a bright tomorrow and undergo considerable
hardships. In addition to economic pressure, there is also pressure from
parents who are worried about our future. High accommodation charges, if
you can call it accommodation... Half-empty libraries, unable to provide
enough quality literature due to lack of funds, force us to buy
expensive and hard-to-find textbooks and scripts. For those traveling
from long distances, there is of course the expensive fare which, like
everything else, is getting more and more expensive. Fees for one of the
last "cheap" things - catering - are also increasing. Last but not
least, some of us also have to deal with "strange" teachers who can make
our lives very unpleasant.

ANOTHER ELITE OFFENSIVE
If you are not one of those whose parents don't have problems with
finances, the government has another surprise in store for you. You will
pay for your studies. What about the fact that studies are already
almost unaffordable for your parents. The government has no money, so it
again takes some from those who no longer have anything. In fact, the
money is there, but the government's neoliberal policies and integration
ambitions mean it will use it for more important things. They need to be
supplied to the banks and the military so that the system does not
collapse, it needs to be reformed with cuts at the expense of the
poorest. For now, we are left with promises that next year will be
better. And to prove it, the government will increase electricity, gas,
rent, fares, postage etc. right in the new year and tell us that they
could have increased them even more but are so benevolent that they didn't.

STUDENTS
You are still a student, but you are already starting to imagine what it
will be like after graduation. Most of us don't have kids yet, our
parents still support us for now, but it won't be like that forever. The
government does what it wants with us because it knows no such thing as
grassroots resistance. She is used to getting away with all the
anti-social economic measures against the poorest sections of society,
only to the stupid nonsense of ossified trade union bureaucrats and to
the mutterings and thunders of our parents and ourselves in front of the
television.

We are students. We are one of those who have the greatest opportunity
to make a difference. We still don't have to toil 8-12 hours somewhere
for a miserable wage. We have more free time than most workers, we have
better access to information (internet) and we don't have big
commitments yet - we have some freedom. These are some of the last
advantages we have, and we should use them as effectively as possible.

RESISTANCE
We are witnessing an attack on the very right to education! We must not
stand by, tighten our belts, listen and maintain the helplessness that
this system feeds in us! Let's organize against the government's plans
to introduce tuition fees in universities.

Let's oppose the increase in prices for accommodation and meals! Let's
not let the attack on the autonomy of universities and trade union
rights go unnoticed!

WE STILL HAVE TIME, LET'S USE IT!

LET'S COORDINATE OUR ACTIVITIES TOGETHER! LET'S NOT WAIT FOR SOMEONE TO
DO IT FOR US! LET'S RELY ON OURSELVES AND ORGANIZE OURSELVES!!!
