Anarkismo.net: Brazil, The secular state and the preaching of intolerance by Bruno Lima Rocha (pt)

This wonderful cartoon from cartoonist Latuff
http://www.anarkismo.net/attachments/may2013/estado_laico_latuff.jpgspeaks for itself,
expresses the sum of ignorance reproduced on an industrial scale and back-feeding the
worst of worldly values ??of capitalism wildest. --- The resolution of the National
Council of Justice (CNJ), dated May 14, forcing register offices in Brazil to register
civil marriage between persons of the same sex, brings more light to a subject crossed the
systemic ignorance and obscurantism. In theory the Brazilian State is secular. Only in
theory. To our misfortune, the discourse of the sacred, meddling interpreters of faith in
private life, today marks the most retrograde actions in society. I have written this
before and I repeat, because it looks funny, but it's tragedy.

At the beginning of the century, the conservative thinking of walking down the social
pyramid and goes hand in hand the worst of Brazilian politics. Who thought of the
neo-Pentecostal sects and the legion of televangelists stunt professional politicians hit.

The problem of preaching reactionary mechanisms using almost caricatured and reproducing
Prosperity theology is that it legitimizes both capitalist accumulation - and therefore
consumption sumptuous - the postures of intolerance. The homo affective rights, and
reproductive rights - and the legalization of abortion - should be no faits accomplis and
taboos insurmountable. We should be discussing the nature of power and the exercise of
democracy, and not recurring themes such as racism and homophobia. But the correlation of
forces is another. The mere presence of the deputy and Pastor Marco Feliciano (PSC-SP) in
front of the Human Rights Commission of the Chamber obliges us to follow the debate.

All preaching intolerance reinforces behaviors identical at all levels. Violence against
homosexuals is fed back by the violent language of preaching conservative. Pastors who
preach intolerance are co-responsible for every man and woman cowardly attacked. If
homophobia was framed as a crime, no political stunt and TV could use this argument as
creationist bullshit. That's why the text of the Draft Law 122 is so important.
Unfortunately, it is another law that walks the walk slow and apparently did not go out so
early.

The CNJ took a right decision, but it could go further. Both the Council and the Supreme
could follow the steps of the Supreme Court of Canada. There is no biblical discourse -
even the writing - can be used against homosexuality and those who do are framed in hate
crime and is punished as well. The sexuality is an individual right and it should be
respected. The secular state has to be forced to respect these rights and punish those who
attack them.
