The Pop-Up union is a temporary fighting organisation, open to all staff in all sectors. It is democratically controlled and run directly by the workers themselves, with no bureaucracy or paid officials. Its formation has been prompted by the difficulties in organising co-ordinated strike action by the three established trade unions at the uni ? Unison, Unite and UCU ? who members accuse of failing to act. However, as the new union is aimed simply at stopping the out-sourcing of jobs and runs a dual-card system, Dit doesn?t compete with the established unions and doesn?t aim to replace them. The Pop-Up union has recently gained legal recognition as a union and is currently organising a strike ballot. (Unfortunately, being a legally recognised union, they still have to jump through a thousand and one hoops to avoid an injunction.) We see this as an encouraging development, a move towards syndicalist methods. Although there are limitations ? notably the temporary nature of it, and, some might argue, its commitment to legal methods ? t
from the bottom-up with the express intention of fighting back against the bosses ? and that is the essence of syndicalism. Victory to ?em!
