Dear all
A first report on the lampedusa meeting, the text will be available in english aoon:
Charter of Lampedusa, the meeting has started
The meeting to write collectively the Lampedusa Charter has just started in the Lampedusa island. For three days, on the island become the symbol of the sufferance of people risking
their lives in accessing Europe, hundreds of activists from Italy and other countries are building a collective process.
The common objective is to write a pact against EU policies controlling people movement, to affirm freedom of circulation and rights for all.
The meeting started on January 31st with the rich and intense meeting with the island's inhabitants, which outlined that closed borders destroy both lives of people living the border and the life of those who try to cross them.
"No militarization of the Mediterranean Sea, freedom of movement, no to migrants' detention centers, full citizenship rights" are the claims of today discussion aiming at completing the Charter by tonight, February the 2nd. A challenging deal, for sure!
Tomorrow, Sunday the 3rd, the discussion will tackle the further steps of the Charter, for the concrete implementations of its principles through mobilizations and actions, starting from the proposal of a European first of march as a first step of common initiatives for the making of Europe as space for rights and dignity.
This is the message from Lampedusa to all Europe: we can transform reality and build a different future, together in our differences.
