Maryland man sentenced for assaulting transgender woman in D.C. store

hate-crimesWASHINGTON -- A man who pleaded guilty to pistol-whipping a transgender woman in a convenience store in Washington has been sentenced to 28 months in prison. Thirty-six-year-old Michael Phillips of Fairmount Heights, Maryland, was sentenced Monday in Superior Court in the District.

Colorado judge considering two lawsuits skeptical of same-sex marriage ban

ColoradoBRIGHTON, Colo. -- Colorado's same-sex marriage ban appeared to be on thin ice Monday after a judge considering two lawsuits against the law pointed out that 15 other judges have recently struck down similar bans in other states. District Court Judge C. Scott Crabtree was openly skeptical of the state's arguments that the ban protects the procreative nature of marriage.
