Annise ParkerIn a battle she characterized as “very personal” and “about me,” Annise Parker, the openly gay mayor of Houston, won a victory last week when the city council passed a law to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. Now, she may have to take on two bigger fights: one to protect the law from a referendum, and another to protect her job from a recall effort.

The men were sentenced for the attack on Wilfred de Bruijn, who was beaten unconscious near his home early in central Paris on April 6, 2013, sustaining five fractures in his head and face, abrasions and a lost tooth.

Cook County, Ill., reports 120 same-sex civil unions converted to marriages

Cook-County-IllCHICAGO -- Cook County, Ill., Clerk David Orr says 120 same-sex couples converted civil unions to marriages Monday as Illinois' new marriage equality law took effect. The same law allowing same-sex marriage also allows same-sex couples to easily convert civil unions into marriages, and the couple's date of marriage is backdated to their date of civil union.

Jackson-MSJACKSON, Miss. — Mississippi's capitol city has passed an anti-discrimination resolution recognizing the dignity and worth of all city residents -- including those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. Jackson is the eighth Mississippi municipality to pass such a resolution.

Fla. judge says three anti-gay groups can’t intervene in same-sex marriage suit

FloridaMIAMI -- A judge in Florida ruled Tuesday that three anti-gay groups who oppose marriage equality for same-sex couples cannot intervene as parties in a state court lawsuit challenging Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage. Circuit Court Judge Sarah Zabel said the groups cannot enter the case as parties simply because they have strong beliefs about same-sex marriage.

Attorney General Pam Bondi (R-Fla.)TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi is firing back at critics who blasted her assertion in court documents last week that same-sex marriage would “impose significant public harm,” saying she is just doing her job. Bondi, who is twice divorced, said she takes exception to those who have sought to manipulate her brief, trying to make it something it is not.

Marshall, who co-authored the state’s 2006 constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, criticized Herring's backing of a constitutional provision barring gay marriage in Virginia.

Bozeman, Mont., adopts LGBT-inclusive non-discrimination ordinance

Bozeman-MTBOZEMAN, Mont. — Bozeman city commissioners have adopted an ordinance that prohibits discrimination in the workplace, housing and public accommodations based on a person's sexual orientation or gender identity. Commissioners voted unanimously on Monday to adopt the ordinance, making Bozeman the fourth city in the state to do so.
