San Mateo County, Calif. to vote on creating LGBTQ advisory commission

San-Mateo-County-CAREDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors will vote Tuesday whether to establish an LGBTQ Commission, which supporters say would be the first of its kind in California. The nine-member commission would advise the board on policy, bring greater visibility to the LGBT community, and provide a forum for individuals to air their concerns.

Buffalo Pride Week capped off with record parade attendance

Participants in Sunday’s Pride Parade, dressed in colorful clothing and waving rainbow flags, march down Buffalo’s Elmwood Avenue.BUFFALO, N.Y. — A record 20,000 people, up from 15,000 last year, took part in Buffalo’s annual Pride parade on Sunday, reports the Buffalo News. “It grows every year, and with this phenomenal weather, we’ll see a much bigger turnout,” said Jorien Brock, senior director of the Pride Center of Western New York, which organizes the event.

Effort to repeal Md. transgender rights law falls short

MarylandANNAPOLIS, Md. -- An effort to repeal a bill banning discrimination against transgender people in Maryland has fallen short. Backers of a petition to repeal the bill conceded Sunday that they gathered about 1,000 fewer signatures than they needed to get the issue on the November ballot.

Governor: Illinois is now ‘on the right side of history’

IllinoisSPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn says the state is now "on the right side of history," as same-sex marriage becomes legal. The Chicago Democrat issued a statement Sunday, the first day of legal gay marriage in all of Illinois' 102 counties. He says Illinois has "always been a place to embrace all people."
