LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Sheriff's deputies in Doña Ana County, N.M., have arrested the mother of a 17-year-old girl on charges of physical and sexual abuse in reaction to learning of her daughter's sexual orientation. Sheriff’s officials have enhanced the charges because they say the incident qualifies as a hate crime.

Military to begin initial gender identity treatment for Chelsea Manning

WASHINGTON -- The Bureau of Prisons has rejected the Army's request to accept the transfer of national security leaker Pvt. Chelsea Manning from the military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to a civilian facility where she could get better treatment for her gender-identify condition. The military will instead begin the initial treatment for her.

Colo. baker appeals order that he provide wedding cakes for gay couples

DENVER -- A Lakewood, Colo., baker is appealing the Colorado Civil Rights Commission's order that he prepare wedding cakes for same-sex couples. Jack Phillips on Wednesday asked the Court of Appeals to reverse the May ruling by the Civil Rights Commission. Phillips was sued by a same-sex couple after he refused to make a cake to celebrate their wedding in 2012.
