World : An ocean of hope

Dear ,

US President Obama is about to create the world's largest marine sanctuary in the Pacific but special interest groups are trying to sink the plan. Let's drown out their efforts by flooding the President with a global tidal wave of support. Sign now to create an ocean of hope!

SIGN THE PETITION
President Obama wants to create an ocean of hope in the Pacific: the world’s largest protected conservation area. And right now we can give him the wave of support he needs to push ahead with the plan.

Obama could use his Presidential powers to massively expand the pristine Pacific Remote Island sanctuary, but large-scale fisheries and cynical members of Congress are doing everything they can to stop him. The President has opened up a period of public consultation to hear from both sides - and it ends next week: this is the world’s chance to ask the President to stand up for our oceans and expand the sanctuary as far as possible!

Four years ago, 221,000 of us helped convince the UK to create a massive marine conservation zone bigger than Germany and Italy put together. Now we can do it again - sign the petition calling on Obama to stand tall and we’ll deliver it straight to the White House!

The reports are dire: in less than 4 decades, our oceans could be completely fished-out, in 100 years, all coral reefs might be dead. This new plan alone won’t be enough to fix the problem, but it could start turning the tide against global ocean destruction -- it will not only double the worldwide oceanic area that is fully protected, but also encourage other governments to follow suit.

The powerful local fishing industry is mounting a desperate effort to sink the plan. They say the sanctuary will hurt their business, but 95% of the fishing they’re talking about happens outside of the protected zone. Other interests want to keep the area open for future drilling, even though nothing has ever been planned.

With the greatest ownership of ocean in the world, the US now has a tremendous opportunity in the Pacific. Let's drown out the voices of the commercial fishing companies, and lay the foundation for protecting our oceans from exploitation. Sign the petition below, and forward it to friends and family:

Our oceans are being decimated by a myriad of threats. But time and again Avaaz members have rallied to save our precious marine life. We have helped secure massive ocean sanctuaries before and plans to protect tuna and whales. We can win this!

With hope,

Danny, Luis, Lisa, Andrea, Ricken, Ana Sofia and the whole Avaaz team
