Belgium : Brussels : CAFÉ PALESTINE: WHAT NOW? COULD LAUGHTER BE THE BEST MEDICINE?

WAAR?

Cafe Monk
Sint-Katelijnestraat 42,
1000 Brussel

02/10/2014 - 19:00
Café Palestine of October will explore alternative ways to share our
message, in particular through humour.

The terrible events of the past summer weigh heavily on the spirits of those concerned with the injustices inflicted on the Palestinian people. Yet these events also sparked massive surge in popular support for the Palestinian cause, expressed through large-scale demonstrations across the world. So far the political powers have ignored these calls for serious action. Since the latest cease-fire, media interest and international attention has plumetted. Meanwhile, the situation on the ground in Gaza remains critical as Palestinians face the daunting task of reconstruction in the context of enduring Israeli oppression.
So what can we do now? How to maintain international attention and develop awareness for the real issues at stake, which call for long-term solutions and in-depth evaluations of the situation? How to capitalise on the current residue of outrage and support without running the risk of tiring people out?
Café Palestine of this month will aim to discuss these matters and explore alternative ways to share our message, in particular through humour.
The evening will go as following:
- It has been a year now that Café Palestine was launched! During the first half an hour of the evening, we wish to have your opinion on its future development. What are your expectations when you come to the Café? How should the sessions be structured? What improvements should we consider? What would be the topics you would like us to address in the next sessions?
- Then half an hour of videos showcasing comedians from Palestine and elsewhere, producing humouristic and ironic commentary on the conflict and its representation in the media, to get examples and inspiration for the debate to follow.
- Small groups’ discussions on different themes related to alternative forms of activism and how humour could be used in communication strategies and actions aimed at supporting the Palestinian cause.
