AFEM2014 Organising for an anarcha-feminist conference in London on October 19th 2014
http://afem2014.wordpress.com/ Here is a better idea of what will take place on the day,
Sunday 19th October. We don?t have a finalised timetable yet, but we hope that it will
follow soon. ---- The event lasts from 10.00am to 6.00pm. Feel free to come earlier/stay
later if you?d like to help us set up and pack up. ---- OUR VISION ---- We want to explore
ideas in-depth together and have time to work through concepts and reach generalised
understandings and concrete plans. As such, we are putting meetings together within
thematic Strands. The idea is that there will be some continuity within them and that they
will reach some outcomes and positions from which we will move forward, with some tangible
outcomes, such as statements or demands, development resources, working groups, plans for
further events, development of our website or setting up something even better.
Of course we don?t expect everyone to agree on everything (beyond our Invitation Statement
https://afem2014.wordpress.com and Safer Spaces policy). But as far as possible, we want
to reach outcomes which will advance the anarcha-feminist struggle internationally, within
and beyond the anarchist movement.
It has been suggested that there could be some kind of publication with these ideas and
outcomes explored, or a website to serve a diverse and international anarcha-feminist
movement more generally.
STRANDS AND MEETINGS
Strand meetings open to all attending the event;
Work and the Workplace (Incl. Workplace Organising; Sex Work).
Control of our Bodies (incl. Abortion, and in Spain and Ireland; Fat Activism).
Our Movement (incl. Love sex/ Hate Sexism; Sexual Violence in Anti-Authoritarian
Movements; Accountability Processes).
Racism, Fascism, Anti-fascism (incl. Anti-Fascist Network, People of Colour feedback session).
Prisons (Empty Cages).
Anarcha-Feminism Internationally (incl. Latin American; Middle Eastern).
Gender and Sexuality (Can?t Fuck/Won?t Fuck; Gender Workshop).
Some spaces are currently reserved for people self-defining as part of a group which wants
or needs to organise separately sometimes, even within anarcha-feminism;
People of Colour
Non-binary/trans
Disability/Health oppressed.
Sex Workers
People involved in those meetings do not need to feel answerable to the wider
anarcha-feminist movement and can use them as they like. The organisers do not want to
decide what will take place beyond expecting the Strands to accord with our Invitation and
Safer Spaces policy. Participants should feel free to set what parameters, goals and
demands they want, and we will support them as best we can. Ideally, people will let us
know in advance that they would like to be part of something, and we?ll hook them up with
other people. But we?ll be keeping the spaces reserved anyway.
Some meetings have a one-hour slot, and some have two. It?s up to the convenors and people
attending to work out how they use the time, but we recommend breaks and changes in
tempo/structure, to maximise participation and keep us all alert.
STRUCTURE
There will be a general meeting at the start of the day and the end of the day. At the
10.00am one, as well as making house-keeping announcements, we will set out something of
our perspective and hopes for the event and introduce our Safer Spaces policy, and discuss
what this will mean in practice.
The strands will begin at 11.00pm and run until 5.00pm. Feel free to dip in and out as you
please.
There will also be a lunch period for those who want to break out from the meetings
structure completely.
At the closing meeting at 5.00 we would like strands to report back and, if possible,
raise/announce ideas/plans for the short-term future.
PRACTICALITIES
We are still welcoming people to our Organising Group. If you have some time to spare
before and on the day, please consider it. E-mail us if you are happy within the
definition of who we are inviting, and we?ll let you know how to go about getting involved.
We are really sorry, but we can?t provide accommodation for anyone and it is certainly not
possible to sleep at the venue itself. We simply don?t have the resources.
Sorry, no dogs except assistance dogs are allowed in the venue.
You may need to bring something to eat and drink because there is nowhere really close to
buy stuff. We are working on this though, so watch this space.
We are looking forward to meeting you and working with you.
