(en) France, Alternative Libertaire AL #246 - CGT: Gather and
fight (fr, it, pt) [machine translation]
CGT saw a historic crisis. Toggle she definitely in an accompanying unionism or she will
operate a desirable carrier recovery to struggle unionism emancipatory projects? The
National Confederal Committee of 13 January will probably decisive. ---- Led with an iron
hand by activists of the PCF, the CGT has borne much of the 1947 class unionism in mid
1960. A holder struggle unionism explicitly a socialist emancipation project. All sadly
marred by the widely own methods and compromise the Stalinists this period. May 68 will be
a turning point: CGT denounces and fights "leftists" releasing a spot on his left
qu'occuperont sectors FO and more of the CFDT which are found most young-es from May 68.
In years 1970/1980 supporting the Programme and the unfailing support to the Government PS
/ PCF causes CGT deeper into the reformist illusion.
With the fall of the Soviet bloc that the CGT will support all the way under the rule of
Krasucki, it is ultimately the political empire of Stalinism collapses. The moral and
political consequences of the militants are enormous demoralization, cynicism,
disorientation ... Deprived of a strong presence of anti-capitalist activists belonging to
other ideologies that could contribute to a positive Stalinization, CGT is an ideological
field of ruins and it is on this ground that will flower progressive abandonment of
emancipatory perspectives, the fading of the fighting, the search for individual benefits.
The Contenders
If it is difficult to get into a particular geography, especially as the lines move very
quickly and no trend is clearly formalized, there are five sensitivities to try to clarify
the issues:
- On the right of the confederation, are found former PCF militants close to Robert Hue
and socialists. They are totally over-represented in the governing bodies in relation to
their real presence in the confederation.
- In the center, there is the soft underbelly often composed of members of the PCF
bureaucrats tied to the survival of the unit to ensure their own survival ... and ready
for any concessions to achieve it.
- Left other activists PCF, now labeled as "leftist" by the central group, that inhabit
the intermediate bodies and growl sometimes for twenty years against developments they do
not approve (!). For this movement then the "business" have been the straw that broke the
camel. Because it is the most numerous militant group and the nearest base unions, his
attitude will be decisive for a positive output crisis. It should probably put here as the
few activists and those of PG Ensemble.
- A little left but not unconnected with the previous end up different networks of
activists, some of which broke with the Communist Party, now judging the reformist. These
networks have focused for some since the early 1990s, many political battles in the
confederation. One might call the whole "post-Stalinist" nostalgic but their diversity is
thankfully richer than this all that much of these comrades are now retired.
- Finally, the revolutionary activists have a place that has widened. Workers' confidence
in their sectors, opening to a certain pluralism, lack of executives from the PCF has
changed the looks on militants of LO, the LCR and the libertarian communists. Those
against the POI are labeled by their detestable practices. Depending on the power
relations and sometimes by choice, they are not included in the governing bodies but runs
many base unions.
Replace the CGT on track in the fight
To be schematic three new options are on the table: a victory for the alliance of right
and center that would complete the transformation into the CFDT-bis. A victory for the
left in alliance with the center that would be only a vague patching. A victory for the
left leaning on the more radical currents that would return, not with revolutionary
syndicalism, but at least with a clearly combative CGT carrier of a draft anti-capitalist
society. Faced with this choice, the national confederal committee (representing all
departmental federations and unions) of 13 January will be decisive.
In concluding this article I am well aware of giving a politician horribly vision. It goes
without saying, but it would be the subject of another article, the libertarian communist
activists campaigning for the CGT found the meaning of federalism, control mandates and
permanent, direct democracy and self-management for a trade union at the company's image
we dream[1]. None of the above is meaningless without a reappropriation of the CGT by all
union members.
