Cartoonist facing years in prison for a Tweet
Dear friends,
Artists have the power to shine light on oppression.
And when artists are threatened for peacefully expressing themselves, we need to jump into action.
Right now, an artist needs our help. Zunar is a political cartoonist in Malaysia who is facing a long-term prison sentence for posting Tweets condemning the jailing of an opposition leader.
Can you imagine facing years in prison for a Tweet?
His case will be decided soon and he needs Amnesty's urgent action.
Zunar is well known for his satirical take on government corruption and electoral fraud.
It's not the first time Zunar has fallen foul of the Malaysian authorities. Since 2009, when his offices were first raided by police, he has been intimidated, arrested and imprisoned. They also confiscated and banned his books, and threatened to close down his printers.
Zunar is not the only one. Like Zunar, more than 40 journalists, academics, political activists and lawyers were interrogated, arrested or charged under Malaysia's Sedition Act in the first six months of 2015. The space for dissent and debate in Malaysia is disappearing fast.
