Dear all,
Greetings from Budapest. We would like to reach out to fellow activists in Germany to ask for information on travel restrictions of refugees with travel documents from Eastern European countries:
We have heard of cases in which people who have been granted a refugee status in Hungary have tried to travel to Germany with their travel documents and IDs, and they have been immediately seized by German police. They have been told that they have no right to be in Germany, and were sent back to Hungary, although they have their travel documents which entitles them to stay in another Schengen country for three months.
This is a very serious restriction on the freedom of movement of recognized refugees, and goes against international law, of course. The fact that people are not allowed to move to Western European countries to move or study is one thing, but the fact that people are even not allowed to travel is making people feel like Eastern Europe is a "big prison".
Have you heard of any similar cases in your countries, esp. in Germany? Or have you read anything from your country's officials that would explain this policy? We would be very happy to have more information on this.
Cheers
Annastiina / Migszol / Budapest
