Dear friends,
“Living in a cage, among terrorists and criminals.”
That’s how Yasmine* described ten long months in prison in Algeria. Her crime? Yasmine was sent to jail just because she’s trans. Now, like hundreds of LGBT people, she’s seeking safety in Germany.
But last week the German parliament declared Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia as "safe places of origin" – even though all three have appalling anti-LGBT laws. That means Germany can send asylum seekers like Yasmine right back into danger.
Before becoming official policy, this decision needs to be voted on by Germany's Federal Council – that’s where we come in. If thousands of us speak out we can convince politicians on the fence to vote against the policy, and make sure people like Yasmine stay safe.
The German government knows that for LGBT asylum seekers, their home countries are often anything but “safe.” In all three countries – Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia – LGBT people are exposed to discrimination, persecution, and violence.
Just a few weeks ago two men in Morocco were brutally attackedin their own house – only to be arrested and charged with being gay. All Out members helped get them out of prison. But thousands of people in Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia are still at risk.
The right to seek asylum is a human right! Ask state authorities of Germany to prevent Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia from being declared “safe places of origin”:
Thank you for going All Out,
Matt, Mathias, Sarah, Yuri, Leandro and the rest of the All Out team.
