EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Each one of us has the power to change a life and change the world. That’s the promise and the power of Amnesty International — and we’ve seen it in action this month.

Your letters, and Amnesty’s tireless advocacy, helped free Mohamedou Ould Slahi, who was subjected to torture and other ill-treatment at Guantánamo for 14 years without ever being charged with a crime. This month, he was reunited with his family. Your letters also helped Mustafa al-Hawsawi get the surgery he has needed for 10 years after being tortured in CIA custody before being transferred to Guantánamo.

We still have a lot of work to do, including through our annual Write for Rights campaign, which I hope you’ll join by clicking here. With increasing numbers of members and supporters across the U.S., we’re strong and ready for the fight. Thank you for your activism.

“You made a difference in my client’s life: This torture survivor has gotten a surgery he desperately needed to alleviate excruciating pain.” – Walter Ruiz, lawyer for Mustafa al-Hawsawi at Guantanamo.
For years, Mustafa al-Hawsawi has lived with agonizing pain arising from his torture by the U.S. government. Now, thanks to you, that’s beginning to change!

Less Than 100 Days to Make Human Rights Count

President Obama has an ever-narrowing window of opportunity to elevate human rights as a priority before he leaves office. Urge him to act on these 3 top human rights issues —closing Guantánamo, protecting refugees and stopping the sale of arms to human rights abusers.

Since its revival in 2010, Amnesty’s Chicago chapter has become a powerful voice for human rights. Blaine Mineman, the AIUSA Area Coordinator for Illinois, attributes this growth to consistent community engagement. From its annual signature event at Riot Fest Chicago to upcoming events with Syrian musicians and filmmakers, the Chicago group continues to grow Amnesty's message of human rights for all.
