Dear friends,

Schools should be a safe place for children to learn, to prepare for their futures. But when an army sets up camp in a school, that changes.

Ahead of International Children’s Day, on November 20, ask President Francois Hollande to sign the Safe Schools Declaration and work to protect schools from attack.

In some countries, children and teachers have been injured or killed when armed fighters – targeting soldiers in a school – attacked. Students have been sexually assaulted or harassed by soldiers. When militaries occupy schools, drop-out rates spike and fewer children enroll. Girls are particularly affected.
France has a strong tradition of helping protect children during war. It should take this a step further, and become the 57th country to sign the Safe Schools Declaration. By signing, France will champion schools, teachers and students, and by supporting education, it will give countries mired in conflict a stronger future.
