“My father Ilham Tohti is serving a cruel life sentence solely for the peaceful expression of his views. He is a prisoner of conscience and an Amnesty International priority case.” – Jewher Ilham
Urge Chinese authorities to end this injustice and free Ilham Tohti now. |
Dear friends,
China's government would like you to forget about my father. His name is Ilham Tohti.
My dad is a respected scholar and peaceful critic of the Chinese government serving life in jail. His supposed crime? Fighting discrimination. A few weeks ago, he won the prestigious 2016 Martin Ennals Award for human rights.
Amnesty International has declared my father a prisoner of conscience — cruelly punished by his government solely for peacefully expressing his views as an academic and writer.
Please help me and my family release him from prison.
Urge Chinese authorities to immediately and unconditionally release my father, human rights defender Ilham Tohti.
The relentless efforts by Chinese authorities to silence my dad are part of widespread and violent repression of the Uighur minority in China.
He has worked tirelessly to fight discrimination against Uighurs in his home region. He adamantly opposed violence. But Chinese authorities see even peaceful criticism as a threat.
After harassing my father and our family for years, Beijing police took him away in 2014 and prevented his lawyer from meeting him for five months. They denied him food for 10 days and put his feet in shackles for 20 days straight.
In a sham, politicized two-day trial, he was convicted of the crime of separatism and was given a life sentence.
Urge Chinese authorities to end this injustice against my father and free him immediately.
My dad is an Amnesty International Write for Rightspriority case.
Write for Rights, the biggest grassroots human rights event in the world, is an easy and powerful way to protect a person under threat of human rights abuses — like my father.
I hope you can take a moment to help defend humanity today.
Help free my father, a prisoner of conscience, now.
Thank you for shining a light with Amnesty today. Together we are a powerful force for human dignity.
In solidarity,
Jewher Ilham
