Joodse studenten vragen annulatie van pro Palestijns event aan Universiteit van Antwerpen

De vereniging van joodse studenten vroeg om het event te annuleren dat binnen het kader van Israeli Apartheid Week deze avond plaats vindt aan de Universiteit van Antwerpen. Verschillende proffen van diezelfde universiteit drukken hun waardering uit voor de beslissing van de universiteit om niet op die vraag in te gaan en bekritiseren de oproep tot censuur door de avond anti-semitisch te noemen. (zie bijlage) 

Deze avond zal Salah Hamouri getuigen over zijn arrestaties als kind door de Israëlische politie in Jeruzalem en de 7 jaar die hij doorbracht in Israëlische gevangenissen toen hij als student actief was. Zijn eigen verhaal en de verhalen van de vrijgelaten kinderen met wie hij dagelijks werkt in Oost Jeruzalem maken het verhaal nog concreter om duidelijk te maken wat er nu net problematisch is aan de samenwerking in het Europese project LAW TRAIN waarin de Belgische politie en de KULeuven samenwerken met de Israëlische politie rond 'ondervragingstechnieken.

Salah Hamouri works with the Palestinian Human Rights organisation Addameer which advocates for the rights of Palestinian political prisoners. He is French-Palestinian and a resident of East Jerusalem was arrested at the age of 19 and spent the first 3 years in administrative detention without being charged of any crime after several weeks of experiencing the special 'interrogation techniques' of the Israeli state after which he was sentenced to 7 years in prison. But even at the young age of 16 Mr. Hamouri was arrested after distributing leaflets against the Israeli occupation for which he was sentenced to 5 months in jail for 'anti-Israeli propaganda'.
At the time of his last arrest he was studying sociology at Bethlehem University but after his release he decided to study law and now works as a researcher in East-Jerusalem with the Palestinian Human Rights organisation Addameer working especially with children and youth who are frequently arrested by the Israeli border police. He will testify about his experiences of living in East-Jerusalem, about his working in the city with ex child prisoners and about his own experience of multiple arrests, interrogations and life in prison.

About Israeli Apartheid Week  

Israeli Apartheid Week ging van start in België op 6 maart 2017 en zal plaatsvinden in 7 campussen in België. Studenten nodigden onder andere Salah Hamouri uit om de campagne tegen de samenwerking tussen de KULeuven, de Belgische politie met de Israëlische politie onder de aandacht te brengen. 

The 13th Annual Israeli Apartheid Week will take place all around the world between March – April 2017. Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) is an international series of events that seeks to raise awareness of Israel’s settler-colonial project and apartheid system over the Palestinian people and to build support for the growing Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.
Inspired by the popular resistance across historic Palestine and struggles worldwide, IAW 2016 included a wide range of events, from lectures, film screenings, cultural performances, BDS actions, to postering in metro stations, setting up apartheid walls on campuses, and many more. These actions took place in more than 225 cities across the world.
The coming year (2017) will mark 100 years of Palestinian resistance against settler colonialism, since the inception of the Balfour Declaration
