This week, the New York Senate unanimously passed a bill cracking down on child marriage in New York! The vote came on the heels of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s public endorsement of the legislation seeking to raise the legal marriage age in New York State.
Under current law, 14-year-olds can legally marry in New York. From 2001 to 2010, nearly 4,000 teenagers under 18 married in New York. Research strongly links child marriage with dropping out of school, poverty, and mental and physical health problems.
This week’s news is a big step, but we’re not there yet. The bill must clear a couple more hurdles before becoming law. Let’s keep the pressure on!
