Dear friends,
"They said we were dogs who had no right to life." Those words come from a man in Chechnya, who was detained and tortured for being gay. Chechen authorities have rounded up more than 100 gay men over the past several weeks as part of an anti-gay purge. Once detained, guards beat the the men, force them to sit on pipes, and electrocute their hands.
Chechen authorities have been posing online as gay men looking for dates, only to entrap their victims. Once the men are imprisoned, guards torture them in an attempt to extract information about other gay men — and some have died in the process. Others were turned over to their families in the hopes that they would perform honor killings.
The government has denied the purge is taking place, instead making the absurd claim that there are no gay people in the region. The spokesperson for the Chechen president said, "You cannot detain and persecute people who simply do not exist in the republic."
These chilling words underscore how urgently we need international intervention. The global community must protect the gay community in Chechnya before more people are murdered. Urge the United Nations to condemn these sadistic programs and use political pressure to end this purge now!
Thank you for all that you do,
