Thousands of patients with cancer, HIV/AIDS, and other advanced illnesses in Guatemala suffer unnecessarily from severe pain because they cannot get appropriate pain medications - not even morphine. Dr. Eva Duarte has spent more than a decade helping people with advanced cancer through their final months. Even now she cries as she recalls how some of her patients spent their last days. The red tape she faced to help her patients obtain pain treatment medication was daunting. Ultimately, she wants her patients to have the necessary pain medicine so they have a better chance of passing away at peace and with their family.
