Dear friends, Xia Lin is an exemplary human being. He's a loving father and husband, and a devoted human rights lawyer in China. Mr. Xia has represented sexual assault survivors, activists and even the artist Ai Weiwei. He's made it his life's work to protect underprivileged and underserved people, often providing legal counsel free of charge. But he has spent the last two and a half years of his life in prison on false charges — without being allowed a fair trial. His son, Xia Chongyu, needs our help. He started a Care2 petition asking the Chinese government to release his father and stop the persecution. Will you sign Chongyu's petition to return his father to him? The Chinese government claims it arrested Xia Lin because of fraud, but human rights experts say this is completely false. Instead, the government detained Mr. Xia after he agreed to defend Guo Yushan, a Beijing activist, as part of a crackdown on civil rights and lawyers throughout the country. Mr. Xia endured 600 days of torture and imprisonment before authorities brought him to court, where they denied him the right to speak on his own behalf. Then, earlier this year, the court delivered a final verdict: Mr. Xia will be sentenced to 10 years in prison. Yet he never even faced a proper trial. But Mr. Xia's family is not giving up. Chongyu needs us to sign his petition to help him free his father. If he is to have any hope of succeeding, he will need to show that people around the world stand behind him.
