Good news! This week, New York State took another important step toward ending child marriage, as the governor signed legislation to dramatically reduce the circumstances under which children can marry. Before now, children as young as 14 could marry with parental or judicial consent. Between 2001 to 2010, 3,850 children younger than 18 married in New York State. Child marriage occurs in every region of the world. Globally, one out of every four girls marries before age 18, and 15 million girls under 18 marry each year — one every two seconds. New York is one of the first US states to cast aside its antiquated marriage law, and it wouldn’t have happened without you. You’ve sent almost 50,000 emails to New York lawmakers since February. Thank you for supporting girls and making a difference in their lives.
