Message: 1
This August will be the launch of the Advanced Problems Making Institute (IAT), an
action-packed summer camp and anarchist anarchist theory for anarchist organizers! The
camp will be held August 11-18, 2017 in Worcester, Massachusetts. ---- The long-term goal
of the IAT is to create a stable center of anarchist education in the Northeast that can
also train veterans and young organizers beyond fundamentals in anarchist theory,
anti-oppression, direct action tactics, and strategic movement development. ---- The IAT
intends to increase the collective capacity to target our enemies on a systemic level with
effective direct action and fieldwork. As Trump's presidency encourages an increase in
anarchist organization and renewed interests in anti-state and anticapitalist
perspectives, we want to strengthen ourselves by building capacities for direct action,
creating infrastructure of movement and community organization for new anarchists. We also
want to bring together experienced organizers to innovate strategies and tactics for our
contemporary context. Instead of an activism, our intention is to cultivate a deeper
understanding of the praxis of the anarchist organization among individuals who already do
some of this work.
In part we have been inspired by radical long-term education projects such as the IWW
Associated Work People's College (1907-1941) , the Movement for New & Society 'Life
Centers' (1971-1988) , the Highlander Folk School (from 1932 to present day) And the
Institute for Social Ecology (1974 to present) . These examples are largely detachable by
bringing together organizers to innovate tactics and strategies for their context
(instruments that were intentionally injected extensively into the work of the radical
movement). These educational projects of great durability are also admirable for the
extensive bonding of their students with long and radical lives. While the informal
education spaces, Campaigns based on fields of action and book fairs are important
elements of our struggle that also have serious limitations. By creating courses of great
durability from 1-4 sessions the IAT hopes to give space and time to advance in depth in
contemporary anarchist analysis, theory and the concrete skills of building the movement.
The IAT is a movement for the creation of a more rigorous exploration of anarchism, which is:
1. Out of the purity of radical internet culture
2. Contemporary in our context
3. Rooted in anarchist social principles
4. Directly united to the struggle of the movement
