GDC of Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) announced the murder of 32-year-old Heather 
Heyer at yesterday's events in Charlottesville, Virginia. ---- After today's murder at 
Charlottesville, we must all unite to defend ourselves and each other. ---- In 
Charlottesville, Virginia, an alliance of fascist groups has made a course titled "Join 
the Right" where they have committed another murder. A fascist dropped his car at high 
speed on other cars, creating a multiple-weapon targeting anti-racism protesters. Tonight 
a 32-year-old woman (whose name we do not yet know *) was killed and many others were 
injured. ---- We feel horrified but we are not surprised by the rise of political violence 
and killings by alt-right and other fascist groups across the country. Today's murder was 
not an isolated incident, But the latter in a series of violent attacks and assassinations 
by fascists. These include, amongst others, the shooting of an IWW / GDG member in 
Seattle, the double knife murder in the MAX train in Portland, and the recent bombing in 
Dar-al-Faruk in Minnesota.

Fascism is a deadly threat to all of us. There is no way we can escape from the issue of 
dealing with it. Politicians, the police and the university will not save us. We can not 
look for our way to security through the vote. As always, the police cared for and 
protected the fascists at the same time that they allowed them and helped them in the 
widespread assault on the protesters of counter-concentration. The university authorities 
refused to use the university campus security to protect students and other people from a 
gang of hundreds of fascists.

The General Defense Commission calls on all people who appreciate human life, freedom and 
dignity to enter the struggle against fascism in any way they can. Give money to survivors 
and family members of survivors of today's fascist assault. Talk to your family and 
friends, colleagues and your neighbors, and define a way of direct and tangible treatment 
of the fascist hatred where it occurs. If you can become a member of the General Defense 
Committee or a local anti-fascist group.

We are probably entering a new phase of the race. We are determined to respond to the 
challenges that lie ahead. We will fight back and defeat the fascists. We have to defend

Whenever the topic of fascism arises, whether it's a fascist group being prevented from 
meeting, or a gang of far-right thugs attacking someone, often someone will demur in the 
following way: ---- 'You like to use the word fascism, what is fascism in your mind? That 
word is used to scaremonger people' ---- Fascism is fairly messy as ideologies and 
movements go, eluding being very concisely defined, but a sketch of it follows. ---- 
Fascism is an extreme nationalist ideology. It is based on some idea of 'rebirth', harking 
back to a mythical golden age where times were simpler, purer, and more honorable. It 
generally gains traction during a time of economic crisis or national disgrace, and that 
'rebirth' is proposed as a way to regain national pride, racial pride, male pride, and so on.

Fascism is a far-right ideology but it often borrows tactical and economic ideas from the 
left, for instance syndicalism / direct action in the 1920s and often welfare state 
policies today. The original Nazis were called the National Socialist German Workers' 
Party (NSDAP) and used leftist rhetoric for a time to garner popular support from the 
downtrodden.

Fascism fully accepts, and in fact worships, hierarchy as part of the 'natural order', 
rather than seeking the classless society which we seek. Practically it involves 
collaboration across classes, with middle class business owners supposedly uniting with 
workers in the national interest.

Fascism is highly hostile to personal liberty, asserting that the individual only matters 
insofar as they are part of the organic whole of the state. The state is the most 
important thing and every person should be an instrument to improving its strength, even 
if that means not having freedom of thought, expression, to unionise, have bodily 
autonomy, and so on.

Usually fascists target at least one marginalised group as a scapegoat for society's 
problems. This is a way to channel people's legitimate frustrations to their own ends of 
gaining state power. It's also deeply convenient to the ruling elite who are let off the 
hook for actually causing these problems, and sections of that ruling class often end up 
supporting the fascists because of this. So fascists blame unemployment, lack of 
healthcare, alienation, desperation, fear, on migrants and people of other races, and 
straight cis men's sense of frustration on women and queer people having more rights. The 
latter is important as fascism is always a men's movement overwhelmingly created by men 
for men.

Fascists consider socialists of all stripes to be their sworn enemies, being ideological 
opposites. As people organised in class solidarity presents a serious challenge to their 
desire for political power, fascists always try to destroy left organisations, whether 
trade unions, campaign groups, or general political organisations like the WSM.

Fascism in many ways is the gun capitalism keeps under the table in times of systemic 
crisis, but it's important to remember that fascist movements aren't simply pawns of the 
current ruling elite and can come into conflict at times due to differing interests and 
the struggle for power.

On top of that, Mr True Fights is simply sexist, even if he claims the opposite. What he 
says is that the sexism suffered by women in the perimeter delimited by him is irrelevant: 
only sexism, which seems to him too sharp (according to his personal criteria); An Afghan 
woman under a burqa, it shocks him. But a woman discriminated without burqa? Not serious. 
In fact, Mr True Fights does not like the idea that women can compare their situation to 
that of men: they should apparently only compare themselves, for example to estimate that 
their fate is "worse" than that of Women. How does the fact that some women's fate is 
"less bad" makes it more acceptable? I once read the comment of a man who said (I quote 
from memory): "Are you fucking our mouths when women are really oppressed by the

discriminated against, raped, victims of conjugal violence or even murdered by a spouse or
