Put International Pressure on Vietnam to Free Political Blogger
|
Dear friends,
Can you imagine risking imprisonment just by speaking out against something your government is doing?
It's shocking — our activism could get us jailed in Vietnam. As a Care2 member, you frequently stand up for what you believe in when you sign, share or author petitions. And as an online campaigner at Care2, I frequently speak out against the government. Well that's exactly what Nguyen Dinh Ngoc was doing when he was served a five year prison sentence in Vietnam.
It's absolutely appalling that a popular blogger like Ngoc could be imprisoned for peaceful written speech criticizing the government. Even more, Ngoc isn't alone — several others have been jailed for similar "crimes."
Vietnam is among the top 10 worst countries for press freedom according to Reporters Without Borders. "Propaganda against the communist state" is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
By signing this petition, you help put pressure on Vietnam to honor a person's freedom of speech and to free Ngoc. His sentence has already been reduced from five years to three. But we need to keep the international momentum going to let the government in Vietnam know that we won't back down until Ngoc is free.
Thank you for taking action,
