Best friends –
Hate has no place in Australia's Parliament.
So why has Milo Yiannopoulos been invited to speak insideParliament next week?
Yiannopoulos is a social media figure, known for attention-seeking stunts in the name of vile transphobia, racism, Islamophobia, misogyny, and homophobia.
Although Yiannopoulos identifies as a gay man who recently posted about getting married, he spoke openly against equal marriage for Australians during the national postal survey.
His aim is to get attention, turn people against each other, and promote hateful ideologies. There is NO logical reason for Yiannopoulos to be given this kind of platform in Parliament.
Yiannopoulos gained notoriety while writing for the alt-right U.S. site Breitbart News, rubbing elbows with white supremacists and devotedly supporting Donald Trump.
Over the years, his many attempts to incite hate include describing the trans community as "mentally ill." He's launched personal attacks against transgender and immigrant students. And he regularly incites brutal online harassment of women, especially women of colour.
Last year he was banned from Twitter for what the company described as "inciting or engaging in the targeted abuse or harassment of others."
The list goes on and on... but we don't need to give any more attention to the hateful acts of Yiannopoulos. And neither should Australia's Parliament.
Yiannopoulos is due to speak inside Parliament on Tuesday, while the House of Representatives is in the middle of debating the marriage equality bill. Australia’s Green Party has already asked that his invitation be revoked, but they need our support.
Thanks for going All Out,
Matt Beard,
Executive Director
