A few days ago, we emailed you with breaking news from here in Australia.
The results of our country's massive postal survey were announced. The majority of Australians voted "YES" in support of marriage equality!
It was an amazing moment. I've dedicated so many years fighting for marriage equality, I couldn't help but cry tears of joy. All day long people were celebrating in the streets.
But there's still a lot of work ahead of us. The results of the survey haven't changed the law – they simply cleared the way for Australian politicians to start moving a marriage equality bill forward.
And after this week's results, opponents of equality are pushing harder than ever to water down or stall any progress Parliament makes towards equality.
Australia has been on the verge of marriage equality for YEARS – but we've never been so close.
Over the past few months, tens of thousands of Australians mobilized across the country, working tirelessly to make this result a reality. And now, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has said marriage equality should be passed by the end of the year.
But opponents of equality want to slow momentum by tabling amendments that would create new ways to discriminate against LGBT Australians.
Now is a critical moment. The people of Australia have spoken for equality, not new prejudice. The Parliament has a duty to deliver on the results of the massively expensive postal survey. If thousands of us speak out, we can make sure they stick to their word and give ALL Australians the right to marry who they love as soon as possible.
