This Bear Lives in "Worst Bear Enclosure in North America"
Save Ben The Bear From This Roadside Zoo

Dear friends,
As an orphaned black bear, Ben arrived at the pleasantly-named "Spruce Haven Nature Park" in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. You might think that a nature park would dive right into nursing Ben back to health, but you'd be wrong. Instead, they stuck him in a small wire enclosure that animal activists call "the worst bear enclosure in North America." That was twenty-five years ago, and Ben is still there today.
Spruce Haven opened in the 1980s as a rescue facility for abandoned or injured domestic animals. As the years went on, though, the park seems to have lost its mission — because now, the animals inside Spruce Haven are the ones that need rescuing.
Luckily, right now, we have a chance to make a difference in the lives of Ben and the other animals of Spruce Haven. Local officials are currently debating whether to ban zoos from the city. If the proposed ban goes through, Ben and other animals could soon be free. But we can't just hope officials do the right thing. We have to show them that we care about Ben's future.
