You helped free Phyoe Phyoe Aung. Now let’s demand justice for Xulhaz Mannan.

2015 Write for Rights Case Phyoe Phyoe Aung

Dear friends,
Read friends his short message from Phyoe Phyoe Aung.

“The year 2015 was a very difficult time for me. On March 10, 2015, police in Myanmar arrested me and over 100 other students for marching in protest against a new education law.

We were beaten with batons, and charged with many questionable criminal offenses. We could have faced more than nine years in prison.

But then someone like you joined Amnesty's Write for Rights, and wrote a letter for my release.

There were thousands of you sending messages — letters, emails, and tweets — urging our release. On April 8, 2016, I was freed.”

As a current 2017 Write for Rights participant Luc, you have the power to make a positive impact on human rights activists like Phyoe Phyoe. You can take action on behalf of Xulhaz Mannan’s case now, and bring his killers to justice. Xulhaz Mannan was a founder of Bangladesh’s only magazine dedicated to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) issues.

In a country where same-sex relations are illegal, Xulhaz pushed the boundaries of Bangladesh’s society through his work. Unfortunately Xulhaz’s work led to his death. Xulhaz Mannan and a colleague were in his apartment when men posing as couriers burst in wielding machetes.

Both men were hacked to death in front of Xulhaz’s 75-year-old mother. Take action now and demand justice for Xulhaz.

Despite overwhelming evidence, in the past year Xulhaz’s case has not been brought to justice. Xulhaz’s attackers are believed to belong to Ansar al-Islam, the same extremist group responsible for a series of similar assaults on bloggers promoting atheism, feminism, science and other secular issues. Demand that there are formal arrests for Xulhaz’s case now by taking action.

You freed Phyoe Phyoe Aung from a human rights nightmare. Please demand justice for Xulhaz Mannan by joining Write for Rights.
