A 40-strong march to Youngs Estate Agents in Kemptown on Saturday 13th January
demonstrated that tenants will not put up with their demands for repairs being ignored.
Tenants demanding "Safe Conditions: No Evictions" showed they would continue to fight
while the agency and landlord refuse to acknowledge the need for repairs and payment for
works carried out. ---- Brighton Solfed is supporting two tenants who have been organising
in regards to structural damp, presence of severe black mould and overall dilapidation
issues dangerous to the tenants' health. These two separate properties are managed by
Youngs. Both tenants are demanding compensation for such issues and one of them, who is
still living in the property, is urgently requesting that a number of neglected and still
unresolved problems are attended to by the agency. This tenant, on raising these concerns
with Youngs' manager David Pay and the landlord Stephen Mitchell, was served with a
Section 21 notice of eviction.

The demonstration marched up St James' Street on saturday morning, with fellow tenants
working in solidarity to show that the revenge eviction and continued failure to address
the demands of tenants are unacceptable. We arrived at Youngs' at 11am, and for the next
hour spoke to members of the public who showed support for the campaign.

The response from David Pay of Youngs included denigrating the tenant and shaming those
who claim housing benefit, saying the tenant "never worked a day in his life." In response
to the restatement of the demands for repairs, Youngs called the police. Evidently the
concerns of tenants to make their homes safe places to live are not important to the
agency, or the landlord.

Youngs have already missed a deadline to respond to the tenants' concerns and are utterly
failing to acknowledge the magnitude of the problem. The mismanagement of deposit funds,
encroaching mould which has caused and exacerbated illness, and collapsing ceilings are
just some of the major problems inadequately addressed by the agency. They are choosing
arrogantly to ignore the fact that their management has led to tenants living in
conditions which are severely dangerous to their health. As such, the public campaign is
intensifying.

There has already been mass-media interest in the dispute, especially the conduct of
Youngs. Tenants have had contact with a BBC documentary team who are working to highlight
the crisis in housing. Other Youngs tenants are coming forward to share their stories, to
show that this is not an isolated problem.

The tenants are open to an amicable resolution to the dispute, yet Youngs and the landlord
continue to treat these issues as something to be swept under the rug, and have yet to
make any offer of compensation. If you want to show Youngs that their response is
unacceptable, you can email david@youngsbrighton.com and attend the next demonstration on
Saturday 27th January at 10.30am meeting at the corner of Manchester Street and St James's
Street.

The territorial struggle against the mega-transformer to the 1000 wind turbines of
Saint-Victor and Melvieu (Aveyron) takes a new turn [2] ---- This fight has been going on
for over ten years. This duration is explained by the large number of appeals against this
project. These remedies are now exhausted and operators are about to start work. ----
Several plaintiffs were successful in the courts, forcing RTE to opt for other wind
turbine sites and wasting a lot of time in legal proceedings and trying to buy other
owners by offering royalties against the provision of land to accommodate the wind
turbines. ---- Amassada [1], a group of opponents who have owned some of the agricultural
land coveted by RTE to install the transformer site, has taken the initiative to prevent
the public inquiry. to take place last November.

In the wake, Amassada launched blocking actions on the Crassous wind turbine project, a
hamlet near Saint-Affrique. Opponents are trying to expand their fight by multiplying the
actions in Saint-Affrique.

December 2nd: walling RTE. A joint action of collectives against Bure, NDDL, Roybon ...
Repression
The state does not remain inactive. He first moved the public inquiry more than an hour
away from there in the north of the department.

The site of Crassous was the subject of a ban on parking from the town hall PS
Saint-Affrique. The Rodez Regional Court imitated it by impeding free movement around the
site in order to prevent opponents, but also peasants and landowners from approaching the
site of clearing of the land. forest to install industrial wind turbines.

These actions were monitored by a damming and filtering system set up by the gendarmerie.
The goal was to identify identities to form files for possible prosecution.

This militarization of the site was done with the presence of 80 gendarmes to take care of
25 activists.

The criminalization of the conflict started with 15 convocations to the gendarmerie of
Saint-Affrique for a preliminary investigation with charges retained for "  theft and
obstruction with assault with the freedom of work  " (sic).

The state wants to hit hard and fast to silence the emerging movements. It does not just
strengthen its hold on the territory, it also communicates to try to demonize the
opponents and thus intoxicating the opinion.

"  After Notre-Dame-des-Landes, these 50 development projects targeted by the zadistes  "
, Le Figaro, January 5th.
For that he decided to set up a state of exception.

It is clear that the state of emergency has become the rule and that for the liberals,
whatever their sensitivity (PS, LREM, LR), the rule of law and more broadly the liberal
democracy are only fictions that it is a matter of calling into question as soon as
political, economic and financial interests are at stake.

The context is all the more tense as everyone has in mind what is playing at Notre Dame
des Landes. The state does not want there to be other ZAD in France and puts the means to
try to contain, even to stifle the challenge where it manifests itself. He also
anticipates a possible victory for NDDL and a possible redeployment of non-sedentary
militant forces to other sites.

Another important stake of the fight, it is a laboratory proposing alternatives on
collective grounds. This changes the relationship between populations, farmers, women
farmers and opponents.

This does not mean that these alternatives will inevitably be anti-capitalist, but it
opens up fields of possibility in which self-management and an emancipatory ecology can
find their place.

Larzac, NDDL and why not Saint-Victor, citizenship and anticapitalism rub shoulders and
feed on these struggles. The options are not the same. But the breeding ground is
favorable for the partisans of a radical transformation of the society. It is up to us to
be present, to weave links between territorial struggles, class struggle and more widely
emancipatory struggles and to develop solidarity everywhere.

Reinette reinette, with AL Aveyron

We would like to ask you to show solidarity with Mia, who is together with Priama akcia in
conflict with Space Mania café. You can send a protest e-mail directly to the boss Viera
Pierce, who refuses to pay owed money to her former worker Mia. The total owed sum is
222.44 €. Since October 2017, Mia has been trying to get her unpaid wage, but her boss
ignored her written requests as well as protest actions she organized together with her
friend in front of the café. In December 2017 Priama akcia entered into the conflict
concerning Mia's unpaid wage. The article contains all the background details a a template
of a protest e-mail. ---- HOW TO SUPPORT THE CONFLICT ---- Contact e-mails of the boss:

More information about the conflict

Mia worked in the café from the end of August until the end of September 2017.

"I found the job on a Facebook page. Viera Pearce was looking for a waitress to work
full-time or on a student-work contract. I called her and expressed my interest so we
agreed to meet the next day. At the interview, she told me that I would receive a
temporary contract and after October I would receive a full-time contract. She even told
me I would earn 500 - 550 €/month. I was supposed to sign in at 9:40 or 9:45 (the cafe
opens at 10:00), despite the fact that I used to be at the café an hour or more before
10:00. I was employed as a waitress, but each day I also worked as a cleaner."

Mia felt that the trial period was going well. She liked her job and her boss told her
several times that she was happy with her.

"She praised me several times. One night I was out with friends and we met her at a local
bar. She even praised me in front of everyone and told them what a good worker I was."

At the end of September Mia received unexpected news.

"On the 26th of September I got a call from my boss, who said someone complained about me
and that I'm to lock up and hand in my keys. This surprised me because no one was at the
café so there was no one to complain. Everyone was saying how accomplished I was and so
on. When I asked her who made the complaint, she stayed quiet and hung up. I texted her
saying OK, I handed in my keys and I would like wages for my work. She replied that she
would pay me on October 30th (it was in my contract that wages are paid on the 30th of the
following month). I said okay."

Even though Mia was disappointed by her boss's behavior and was in a bad financial
situation, she felt that even if she wanted her money earlier, her boss would not pay.
Therefore she waited until October. On October 27th she received a text from her boss to
come for her wages. However, on the spot she only received 70 €, after working for 20
days. Her boss said the amount corresponds to 40 hours of work. When Mia objected that she
worked more than 40 hours and asked to see the attendance sheet, her boss stated that she
did not have it. She then demanded that Mia sign her paycheck immediately or she won't
even receive the 70 €.

Mia decided to sign the paycheck so she would receive at least some money. Later that day
she told her story to a friend who she knew would listen to her and support her. Together
they tried to get in touch with the boss through text messages, phone, e-mail, but without
success. However, they did not stop there and decided to organize direct protest actions.

Together they staged pickets in front of the café, which visibly upset her boss. They had
to endure jeers and insults from the boss's husband who even filmed them. Still, they
endured and showed up almost every day. The boss would regularly call the police and tell
the officers that Mia was stealing from her when she was employed, even though the boss
herself counted the money every day and everything was always in order. Furthermore, the
boss complained that the two protesters were scaring children in the café and disturbing
public order. Later she even threatened them with a criminal complaint. However, the
boss's actions did not deter them from further protests.

INVOLVEMENT OF PRIAMA AKCIA

When Mia and her friend learned about the activities of Priama akcia, they approached us.
We met and discussed the whole situation. It turned out that Mia had worked 123 hours and
that she was entitled to more than just 70 €. She even had her whole attendance, as she
kept her own record at home. She also had photos from the official attendance, which
proved that Viera Pearce had no intention to obey the Labor Code which only allows 10 work
hours per week on Mia's contract (Mia's work time exceeded 10 hours on her second day
already!). Together we made a detailed calculation and decided that we would present it to
the boss with a clearly stated demand.

On December 22nd, 2017 Mia, together with group of Priama akcia members and supporters,
handed in her demand letter to the boss's husband (since the boss herself was not there).
He acted as if the problem did not concern him, claimed that it was his wife's issue and
refused to take the letter. We told him that we would leave the letter on the ground in
front of the café and despite him acting like he didn't care, he immediately picked it up
after we left. Suddenly, the same night, Mia's ex-boss came back to life and texted Mia
with a proposal to come to an agreement. Her idea of an agreement was for Mia to meet with
four lawyers of Space Mania! But this is not the way to go. Since the owed sum of 222.44 €
was not paid by the deadline set in the letter, Priama akcia has entered into conflict
with Space Mania and we will continue until Mia receives the money that belongs to her.

Thank zou for your solidarity!

On January 18th, two days before the one year anniversary of the J20 demonstrations, the
Attorney's Office in Washington, DC dismissed all charges against 129 defendants who were
arrested during the Inauguration Day protests last year. While this is a victory for
friends, families, and defendants who showed support to fight the charges, of the 188
remaining defendants, 59 of them still face up to 60 years in prison. ---- Targeting
Militancy ---- The J20 cases have become a deliberate attempt by the state to label
protestors as felons and agitators, and to vehemently punish collective dissent. According
to a motion filed by the US Attorney's office, the government is channeling its efforts to
prosecuting defendants who 1) engaged in identifiable acts of destruction/violence and
assaultive conduct, 2) participated in the planning of violence and destruction, and 3)
demonstrated an intentional use of the black bloc tactic. It is evident that the emphasis
on the "black bloc" serves to foment public disapproval against militant direct action,
but also against a specific tactic used by anarchists, revolutionary anti-capitalists and
allies, and thus targets those on the left for specific politics. The association of black
bloc with anarchism, and now the state's legal repression of this tactic, makes clear the
state's intentions.

A Flimsy Case

The list of those still facing felony charges include journalists, medics, and protesters.
Since the inception of these trials the prosecution had no evidence tying any of the
protesters with destruction. More than 200 participants were indicted on felony riot
charges: inciting to riot, rioting, conspiracy to riot, and destruction of property. Along
with these amorphous accusations, the prosecution handled their own investigation poorly
with misconduct, shoddy evidence, and encroaching investigation tactics.

Controlling Dissent

We live in dangerous times and the repression coming out of the J20 trials has yet to
fully reveal how the current administration seeks to and can control future dissent. We
must continue channeling our organizing efforts to fight against a state that allows the
Neo-Nazi who killed Heather Heyer to face less time than a group of protesters who may or
may not have broken a handful of windows. We also note that as political disaffection and
polarization grows, the legitimacy of the states wanes, and thus the will of the urge of
the state to use repression can strengthen.

Building an Offensive Resistance

Defensive organizing takes precedence in this moment but we also need to build on the
public momentum of these trials as they are happening in tandem with prison strikes and
the backlash against the white supremacist violence of the police. We believe though that
it is not only possible but essential to use this momentum towards an offensive strategy,
which means not just holding our ground against repression but building larger struggles
and social movements to beat back and disable the power of the state to commit violence in
our daily lives.

The J20 trials are not just battles in a courtroom but a political battle over the
narrative of resistance and repression. Building broad support within social struggles for
J20 defendants is key. Packing the courts, raising funds, and events that raise public
awareness are pivotal in the upcoming cases of the remaining 59 defendants. Let's continue
our efforts in the struggle! Viva l@s que luchar!

In Briançon is currently an episode that could become a major humanitarian and political
crisis. The city has become a place of passage for migrants from Italy. Given the climatic
conditions and the infamous acts of the police who endanger the lives of these migrants,
solidarity is organized. ---- Border town wedged between the mountains, Briançon and its
surroundings have become a place of passage important migrants in recent months. This
region has always been a place of transit, whether during periods of Italian immigration
or even during the Kosovo war. But the most alarming today is the intensification of these
passages by non-experienced people and weakened by their journey, linked to a dangerous
anti-migratory policy, in an environment with climatic conditions becoming particularly
hostile. Winter is settling and the mountain is becoming more and more dangerous for those
who want to join France. Last year already two people were amputated hands and a part of
the feet because of frostbite.

Police acting illegally

In addition to these hostile conditions, the police are illegally conducting crossings and
abandoning minors or seeking asylum across the border. It also organizes ambushes that can
have dramatic consequences. During the summer, two miners, taken by surprise and dazzled
by the headlights of a policeman's van on the side of the mountain, fell 40 meters. One
escaped with broken limbs, the other is still hospitalized in Grenoble after several
months of coma.

Faced with this state of affairs, the local population is mobilizing. Host families,
marauding, creation of a shelter, squats, fundraising, language courses, health centers
and legal aid are set up by volunteers from the city and surrounding areas. The state does
not take its responsibilities ? The Brianconnais and Birançonnaises take care of it.
Indeed, faced with the lack of structures, the self-organization of different groups of
people makes it possible to improve the reception conditions of migrant people.

What is being done in Briançon at the moment is a breath of fresh air and a lesson in
organization and militant activities. By getting to an agreement between political groups,
of anarchist tendencies or more moderate, the actions of solidarities multiply and
diversify in order to answer the crucial stake of the reception of the migrants.

When one asks why so much solidarity, the answer is quite unanimous. In an environment
such as the mountain, mutual aid and solidarity is almost cultural. For that, the mountain
is beautiful.
