Dear friends,
Authorities in Malaysia have been offering "courses" to try and change transgender people.
These courses are incredibly harmful. Authorities claim it's a programme to give trans people "different opportunities," but we know what they're really doing: teaching trans people to hate themselves and trying to "convert" them to fit the government's idea of "normal."
My name is Mitch Yusof and I'm the Executive Director of SEED, an organisation advocating for the rights of the trans community in Malaysia.
We're mobilising to try and stop these dangerous "courses" and secure a meeting with the Minister of Health – but he won't listen unless thousands of people join our outcry.
These so-called "courses" shouldn't even exist – not in Malaysia, not anywhere. They fuel hatred, violence, and discrimination. They're a violation of human rights.
So-called "reparative therapies" aimed at changing a person's gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation are completely unethical. And science has proven them to be pointless and extremely harmful.
By hosting these "courses," authorities are reinforcing the prejudiced rhetoric that trans people can be changed. No one can change a person's own gender identity. Trying to do so is dangerous and traumatising.
Thanks for going All Out,
Mitch Yusof
Executive Director, SEED
