Was there an anarchist school in the Amazon  ? This question will lead us in this article
to (re) discover past and present libertarian pedagogies, distant or close. Take your
ticket and embark on an exciting journey! ---- Once upon a time, Belém do Pará in 1919. In
the middle of the Brazilian Amazon, between rivers and forests, but in a booming
metropolis, whose economy is then doped with rubber, followers of the Catalan anarchist
pedagogue Francisco Ferrer y Guardia go ten years after his death and according to legend,
to challenge the good Europeanized society of Pará, more inclined to school his children
in the confessional schools of the fluvial city than in that of an anarchist. ---- That
year, the Amazonian capital, still effervescent and full of Europeans who came there
because of the wealth extracted by the unfortunate seringueiros from the heart of the
jungle, would have seen landed among the schools made available to its youth, a school
with principles and anarchist teaching. A novelty in the educational landscape whose
constituent elements, scope, difficulties and successes remain, for the time being, obscure.

Discovering libertarian pedagogies
It is the adventure of the exhumation of the memory of this school which will serve us as
the thread in this series of articles dedicated to the libertarian pedagogies.

Research on the creation of this equatorial libertarian school is just beginning. An ideal
time to launch, in our monthly, a series of articles devoted to the achievements of our
current of thought in educational terms: in all possible variants, because diversity is an
important hallmark of our movement, which is anything but uniform.

It is therefore to a real-time research, over the months, to discoveries of practical
achievements of pedagogies from the anarchist movement or inspired by principles
compatible with its values, and whose point of articulation will be this survey around the
world. Francisco Ferrer rational school in Belém, far from Barcelona, this series of
articles invites you.

It will present the successive advances of the research of archives and put them in link
with the other big (and less known) achievements of libertarian education.

An anarchist from France exiled to Brazil
But to tell a little bit about how came the idea of this research, it is necessary to talk
about its author, a student in French pedagogy in Brazil. Arrived two years on these lands
through Guiana, an activist in the cabana Anarchist Federation (FACA), the name of the
revolution in northern Brazil during the XIX th century, on hearing the comrades the
political organization of this school as forgotten outside the militant circle that is in
his memory that the desire was born to know more.

Because, it must be said, in the beginning, there was nothing concrete, just the evasive
mention of the "  Modern School of Belém  " ... nothing more, since by questioning these
first referents, they do not did not know exactly where they had heard of what was more
mythological than historical.

During a first visit to the cultural center of the city of Belém, it was possible to
discard inconclusive tracks like the possible presence of the school in 1905 under the
name of Athénée du Pará, which could have been a a relatively logical name at that time
for a libertarian school.

But it was also an opportunity to find a concrete trace of knowledge at the beginning of
XX th century the work of the Catalan educator. A poem of 1919, signed Basilio de
Carvalho, reproduced here and entitled The Modern School.

First concrete track
A proof that the intellectual world of Belém at the time knew the work of Francisco
Ferrer, but not yet a proof of the existence of a school in his name or according to its
principles.

One can therefore rightly ask the question: "   In those years, did Belém lend itself to
the creation of a school with a libertarian pedagogy  ? Did this modern school of Belém
exist beyond the legend peddled by the comrades  ?  "

It is these questions, and all those that will arise from the answers to these research
premises, which will form the basis of this column. Base to which will be added, as and
when, add other voices, other examples of what are the libertarian pedagogies.

See you soon for the rest of this journey of (re) discovery of our educational
achievements, for this journey in time and space to which we invite you.

Caesar (AL Saint Denis)

The  Vogliamo Tutto college was  created at the end of 2008 in Nea Smyrna. We are an
anarchist collectivity, with many theoretical and ideological perspectives. The sure thing
is that we want and seek to operate self-organized and anti-intelligence, against any
institution of power and mediation. Understanding that we live in a society of
exploitation and subjugation with institutions and relations of power diffused in every
aspect of our everyday life, we chose to act and intervene within the framework of social
and class competition, aiming at its exacerbation and diffusion within the space and the
time. ---- We chose to set up this website because we consider it an additional helpful
tool for spreading our speech and communication. In any case, we believe that the
essential fermentation, interference, communication and exchange of views is, is being
done and done on the streets.  Dating there ...

At the end of January 2018, FSB officers detained several anti-fascists in St. Petersburg.
Activists were accused of participating in the activities of a terrorist organization.
"Network", which until now was not known. ---- According to the case documents, the
"Network" unites cells in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Penza and Belarus. Members of the
"Network", in line with the FSB version, planned a revolution in Russia, organizing
explosions during the presidential and World Cup elections. The republic.ru interviewer,
who read the materials of the case, says that there are two tendencies: on the one hand, a
new generation of "narodowolci" appeared in the country (applying terror to members of the
revolutionary Narodnik organizations operating in Russia in the 1970s and 1980s XIX
century); on the other hand, on the eve of the presidential election, the FSB is trying to
show its significance, revealing further "interregional groupings" threatening the state.

On December 11, the ovdinfo.org portal published a report devoted to persecution in
connection with the "Malwian revolution" ("Revolution of November 5"). Wiaczeslaw Malcew,
leader of the moderate movement of Russian nationalists, "Artpodgotowka", for several
years he promised that on 5 November 2017 a revolution will take place in Russia. However,
a week before that date, the "Artpodgotowka" movement was considered extremist, after
which arrests began throughout Russia. After October 30, several hundred people were
detained, accusing them of extremism and terrorism. Sam Malcew in the summer of 2017 fled
to France, where he is trying to get political asylum. The report mentions a terrorist
group in Penza. At that time, it was reported that there were 5 defendants in this case,
including 2 anarchists. It turned out, however, that there are six defendants, or at least
some of them belong to the anti-fascist movement. One of them Arman Sagynbajew
("Andzrej-Bezpieczenstwo", engineer and sapper, he was responsible for the production and
laying of explosives) he lived before arrest in St. Petersburg. According to fontanka.ru,
the records on the detention of Igor Shishkin contain the protocol of Sagynbayeva's
interrogation.

On 17 or 18 October in Penza, Yegor Zorin ("Grisha") , the first accused "penzenska case"
was arrested (he was to be a shooter who "takes part in clashes with uniformed soldiers in
a combat situation"). He was the first to testify, which according to the families of
other detainees was "the wildest". On New Year's Eve his detention was changed to house
arrest. After him Ilia Szakurski was arrested ("Spajk" , as a tactician was to teach
martial techniques) and his friend Vasily Kuksov ("Koks") . Szakurski studied with Zorin
at the physics faculty of the State University of Penza and was a fairly well-known person
in the leftist community of Penza. He often organized lectures, cleaning parks as part of
ecological initiatives, as well as actions in defense of animal rights.

On October 27, Dmitry Pechelinv was detained (he was to set up a group, he was its leader
and ideologist, he was a shooting instructor before the arrest). At the beginning of
November, Andrei Chernov was also detained in Penza ("Twin", he was supposed to be a group
communicator), in Saint Petersburg - Saginbayeva, who was transported to the investigative
prisoner in Penza. According to the investigators, all the detainees belonged to the
terrorist group "5.11" (Article 205.4 KK), attempting to evoke social unrest. As evidence
of participation in the terrorist group, replicas of firearms were used to shoot plastic
balls with caliber 6 (less often 8) mm, which are used when playing airsoft. Playing
airsoft, according to the investigators, was nothing but preparation for terrorist
actions. Currently, 5 people remain in the investigator, Zorin is under house arrest. The
youngest is 21 years old, the oldest is 27. In addition to the people mentioned above,
there is also a certain "Ryzy"- deputy Pczelincewa, who was to deal with the recognition
and recruitment of new members, and the ideologist and coordinator of "Boris" .

In the summer of 2016, according to investigative materials, several new organizations
joined the "Network". In this way, four Russian cells were formed. Penzenska
(headquarters) received the name "5.11" or "Wschód" ( ?????? ). According to other
testimonies, "East" was defined as one of the units inside "5.11". It was to consist of
Szakurski, Zorin and Kuksow. The Moscow cell was called "MSK" (2-4 people, St. Petersburg
- "Mars Field" (6 people, including Filinkow) and "Iordan-SPb" (7 people, including
Shishshkin). All members are referred to by the FSB as anarchists .

The process of unification of the "Network" was described according to the testimonies of
the accused. Shishkin, who was interrogated 24 hours a day, claimed that St. Petersburg's
organizations were established in spring 2016. Young people meeting twice a month in
Olgino, on the territory of the air soft training ground, practiced carrying weapons and
providing medical assistance.

Then representatives of the "Network" came to St. Petersburg from Penza, who presented the
organizational development plan. It was about the active application of "black terror"
towards representatives of state authorities. According to the group's assumption during
the so-called On the day of "Cz", the events of provoking riots, using terror, local
authorities, the leadership of the party "Jedny Russia" and the heads of the organs of
internal affairs had to be liquidated.

Several "Networks" meetings took place. The first - in July / August 2016 in the Moscow
region. Anarchists were supposed to practice the occupation of the Patrol Service. The
second congress took place at the turn of 2016/2017 in the village of Sapernoje of the
Leningrad Oblast, the third - in February 2017. Then Shishkin decided to leave the group,
because he stopped supporting the methods of his companions. The Petersberg members of the
group would then call for active radical actions.

Sagynbajew, in turn, admitted that he had bought 15 kg of aluminum powder for the
production of explosives via the website avito.ru. During the search, a 15-liter bucket
was found in his apartment, which in 1/3 was filled with aluminum powder, moreover 4 kg of
ammonium nitrate, two alarm clocks and radio elements suitable for launching the explosive
device. He allegedly gave the rest of the elements to a member of one of the St.
Petersburg groups. In addition, the materials say that cell members purchased ammunition
and a folded beheaded assault rifle Kalashnikov. It is not known if this weapon was found.

Another proof of guilt presented by the FSB is the report of the secret witness of "Kiry
Tatarinowa" , which Shishkin was to tell about the secret anarchist organization, which
was to destroy the state. Tatarinowa was friends with Shishkin in 2013-2014, after 2015
they did not see each other.

The main part of the accusation is built on the testimony of Penza activists. According to
the investigation, all the accused have pleaded guilty. Activists, in turn, claim that it
was the FSB agents who gave them weapons, and after being arrested, they tortured with
electricity, hung upside down, threatened to leave the forest with broken legs. According
to the wife of Pczelinkawa Angelina, she was also intimidated, and Pczelinc was forcibly
administered tranquilizers and other medical supplies. In addition, he was tortured daily.
In one of his letters, he wrote: "I am afraid my heart may not last and I will not leave
this place alive. This is hell. "

Shishkin did not talk about torture, but before the court hearing his friend noticed that
Shishkin was beaten. In the case materials, this fact is explained by Szaszinin himself,
who shortly after the detention explained everything in a letter addressed to Alexander
Radionov, the FSB manager in St. Petersburg. The accused explained that all his injuries
arose during the training of martial arts in the club "Versus". After the appearance of
this document, Shishkin was sent to medical examinations. Doctors diagnosed the fracture
of the orbital bottom wall, numerous hematomas and abrasions.

We would like to remind you that on 23 January, the 23-year-old anti-fascist Wiktor
Filinkow was lost. He found himself after two days. The press service of the St.
Petersburg courts announced that he had been arrested and pleaded guilty to participating
in a terrorist association whose participants "have anarchist views." The following day,
Filinkow visited observers from the Social Commission of Observers - Wiktor told them that
he was subjected to torture. In addition, Filinkov submitted a complaint regarding torture
to the Investigative Committee. His lawyer, Vitaly Cherkasov, also addressed the
leadership of the investigator who is in Filinkow, for the FSB officers being barred from
being detained. According to Filinek himself, after being detained on the night of January
23, the FSB officers escorting him from a municipal hospital outside St. Petersburg,
applied him to psychological and physical violence, by striking with his fists and stunner
numerous blows and impacts on various parts of the body. It all lasted about four hours.
The campaign was led by Konstantin Bondariew, who in person, about 10 times, hit
Filinkowa. On January 29, two FSB officers visited Filinkowa in the investigator's
insurgent. One of them was Bondariew, the other person did not introduce himself.
Filinkowa was intimidated and offered cooperation in exchange for the smallest possible
sentences - 3 years imprisonment. In response to Filinek's words about torture which he
used against him, Bondariew replied: "I do not like what I do. I appeal to you as a human
being. Accept my apologies. "After these words, he gave Filin the hand, but Filinkov said
he could not accept the apology. It all lasted about four hours. The campaign was led by

On January 25, 26-year-old resident of St. Petersburg, Igor Shishkin , went missing - he
went for a walk with his dog. The dog came back home accompanied by policemen who searched
the apartment of Shishkin. The court of St. Petersburg arrested Shishkin on the same
charges as Filinkowa.

In the evening of January 25, Ilja Kapustina was arrested , who, despite attempts to
extract his admission of guilt, did not do it and was released.

On 27 January, journalists of "Mediazony" (https://zona.media) tried to enter the
anti-fascist Igor Shashkin's trial. However, they were stopped by the police. Shishkin is
featured in the case material as a supporter of radical ideology and organizer of massive
events "Do not give up" and "Black Petrograd"; he was the founder of anarchist groups
"Autonomous Action" and "Vegetarian Power", he was convicted several times from KA
articles, accused of robbery and causing severe bodily harm.

On January 30, activists of various leftist and anarchist organizations protested under
the seat of the FSB on Lubianka, demanding the cessation of repression and torture of
activists from St. Petersburg and Penza. The protests took the form of one-person pickets.
The trade union of journalists joined the protest of activists to pay attention to the
arrest of journalists who wanted to take part in the trial of Shishkin.

In the meantime, an account created by police officers appeared on facebook, which
impersonates a well-known Russian activist. The police are trying to get FB friends among
activists to gain access to their profiles and thus gain even more information about the
environment.

On the morning of 31 January, a search was held at the apartment of journalist Pawel
Nikulin, co-chairman of the Trade Union of Journalists. Probably the detention was
connected with the text of Nikulin "From Kaluga z dzichad", which was published in March
2017 in The New Times. In the words of advocate of "Open Russia" by Roman Klimow, Nikulin
acts as a witness in the case concerning the passage of training in order to conduct
terrorist activities (Article 205.3 of the Criminal Code). Pawel was confiscated with a
laptop, two boxes with the almanachem "Moloko plus" and T-shirts with the logo of the
publishing house. After giving evidence, Pawel was released.

Pawel's friends and colleagues do not believe in coincidence. On January 30 Pawel
participated in a picket organized opposite the FSB building against the arrest of
journalists Sasha Bogino and Dawid Frenkiel, who were not allowed into the open court
hearing in the case of anti-fascist Igor Shashkin. They were detained for trying to get
into the court building, thereby breaking the art. 49 of the Law "On means of mass
information".

Schedule ---- 19.00: soep/soup, brood,... ---- 20.00: Trouble #9 screening (~35mins
length) ---- 21.00: Trouble #10 screening (~35mins length) ---- Plaats: Anarchistische
Bilbiotheek, Eerste Schinkelstraat 14-16, Amsterdam ---- Language/taal: english ----
Trouble #9: Learning to Resist ---- Older generations never tire of reminding youth that
the years they spend on college or university campus are formative moments in their lives,
times that more often than not play an important role in shaping the trajectory of their
future careers and helping to determine the types of adults that they will soon become.
These are, after all, years where new life-long friendships are made, politics are formed,
and ideas about one's role in the world start to take hold. What these old-timers often
don't tell you is that if you play your cards right, they can also be the years when you
participate in your first riot, flip over your first cop car, occupy your first faculty
building, or topple your first government.

On this, the 50th anniversary of the global uprisings of 1968, subMedia pays homage to the
insurgent youth who helped kick things off a half-century ago by taking a look at some
contemporary student-led movements that are still tearing things up around the world. In
this month's episode of Trouble, the first of a two-part series on radical student
movements, sub.Media talks to a number of current and former student organizers from
so-called Puerto Rico, Quebec and Chile as they share their experiences from the
high-points of past struggles and provide hard-fought lessons that can help prepare a new
generation for the battles to come.

Trouble #10: School's Out

These are hard times for those pursuing a so-called "higher education". All around the
world, state and regional governments continue to implement strict neoliberal austerity
policies aimed at slashing social spending and transferring more and more public wealth to
the rich. As a result, the burden of financing educational institutions has increasingly
fallen on students themselves - often in the form of rising tuition fees and skyrocketing
levels of personal debt. In societies with entrenched levels of social and economic
inequality, these high tuition costs bar large segments of the population from accessing
these institutions altogether... which in turn helps to cement preexisting divisions based
on class, race and gender. Meanwhile, those who are able to scale the walls of the ivory
tower are increasingly graduating into economies with paper degrees that do little to
secure them well-paying careers. Instead, these students often find themselves forced into
hyper-exploitative internships, or precarious jobs where they must toil for decades to pay
off their student loans.

In this month's edition of Trouble, the second in a two-part series marking the 50th
anniversary of the student-led uprisings of 1968, sub.Media continues to shine a light on
contemporary student struggles from around the world. This episode features interviews
with current and former student organizers from Mexico, South Africa and the United
States, as they share their personal experiences of participating in campus occupations,
student strikes, and insurrectionary attacks against the capitalist and colonial education
systems that shape their collective present and seek to determine their shared future.
