Brighton Solidarity Federation has concluded its campaign against the student lettings
agency G4Lets. The campaign was in support of two groups of tenants who had just over
£3000 deducted from their deposits. One group of tenants had £2000 taken from their
deposit for fire safety, redecoration, and pest control, in spite of an Environmental
Health Report from the council informing G4Lets that these issues were their
responsibility to resolve as part of landlords' general obligations to the properties they
let out. Another group of tenants had £1080 taken from their deposit for cleaning and
redecoration, in spite of the fact that they cleaned the property before leaving it, and
had it professionally repainted, which they had an invoice for as evidence.
The tenants approached SolFed in October last year and explained their grievance. They
highlighted that over the course of their tenancies, G4Lets showed an impressive capacity
for incompetency, deception and manipulation. Early on in their tenancy, one group of
tenants were copied into an email that admitted that the carpet in their house was 'beyond
cleaning' even before they moved in. G4Lets then proceeded to charge these tenants for the
cleaning of the carpet at the end of their tenancy, even though it was going to be
replaced. They also sent builders into the property during the exam period and without
consulting the tenants. In the same tenancy, one part of the flooring in the property had
been so neglected that it was wasting away and collapsing. This is only a small sample of
the ways in which they were mistreating these tenants.
Along with the tenants, we wrote to G4Lets in early November, outlining the issues and
demanding the return of the deposits, as well as compensation for the stress and time
involved in dealing with these dodgy deductions, and for poor service in general.
The campaign began with a picket of the agency a week after delivery of the demand letter,
after G4Lets insisted that they would not be engaging with the demands and that the
tenants should pursue redress via the Deposit Protection Scheme (DPS). We told the tenants
that they were free to do this if they wanted, and explained why Brighton SolFed doesn't
pursue issues such as deposit theft in this way. Landlords and agencies have three
different protection schemes to choose from, so it would not be in their interests to
consistently rule in favour of tenants. Moreover, agencies have staff dedicated to
undertaking such administration, who have knowledge and experience of the regulations,
meaning that the deck is stacked in their favour even when the agency is so blatantly in
the wrong, as in this case. We also think that direct action public campaigns help to
highlight that many of us share these problems, and that our power lies in banding
together to fight them. DPS procedures keep these problems private and help agencies to
guard against the formation of solidarity and support amongst their tenants. Finally, not
all tenants have the evidence required to challenge a deposit deduction, but the
landlord/tenant relationship - one person forcing another to pay them in order to have
somewhere to live - is fundamentally exploitative, suggesting that someone only has the
right to a home if they have the capacity to line someone else's pockets. We think this is
wrong, so when even more money is taken from tenants via deposit deductions, our
solidarity is with tenants whether or not they have the types of 'evidence' required by a
DPS to prove their illegitimacy.
The tenants decided to continue with the public campaign. G4Lets - who rent exclusively to
students and who only deal with rentals, not sales - is tucked away in a residential area
near Fiveways. Clearly they know, as a business that systematically exploits and rips off
students, that it's best for them to keep a low profile. As well as pickets, we thus also
published articles about the dispute - highlighting that G4Lets were protecting the
profits of multimillionaire landlords - and the campaign also received wider media
attention. As things went on, we also began to receive contact from other tenants being
mistreated by G4Lets. We heard stories of tenants with dangerous disrepair in poorly
maintained houses who feared reporting it in case they were charged for the repairs, of
tenants who had already been told that deductions were going to be made from their
deposits at the end of their tenancies for repair works that were not the consequence of
any wrongdoing by them, of tenants threatened with eviction during the exam period, and of
tenants who were pressured into paying agency fees and holding deposits on properties that
G4Lets seriously misrepresented to them when showing them round.
In late December, it seemed as though G4Lets were spooked by the strength of feeling
against them. They offered to refund £400 to the tenants, acknowledging, for example, that
they had charged for the cleaning of a carpet that had been replaced - a spurious charge
representative of just how dodgy their wider overall practices are. £400 was well short of
the £3000 plus compensation that the tenants were rightfully owed, so they decided to
continue with the campaign. A pledge of staff at the Higher Education institutions in the
city was set up, which said that they would be advising their students to avoid G4Lets
until the issue was resolved. G4Lets' displeasure at this was clear at further pickets
that happened, given that their business model depends on stealing from students, but they
didn't make an improved offer.
The main purpose of taking direct action in this situation was to get the tenants their
money back and some compensation. In this case, this sadly has not happened. Whilst it
seems clear that the campaign has cost G4Lets some business, it would appear that what
they are really worried about is that paying out under the pressure of direct action could
lead to a snowball effect. Undoubtedly, there are hundreds if not thousands of tenants who
have been systematically ripped off by G4Lets - paying back that stolen money would likely
send their business under. It seems as though they calculated that losing some business
was less of a risk than paying out, which might have seen them lose all of their business.
The dispute is not completely over for these tenants, who accrued a considerable amount of
evidence of G4Lets' wrongdoing over the course of the campaign, including the
Environmental Health Report, which laid the blame for these pre-existing issues at the
property firmly at the door of G4Lets. The report is unequivocal when it states: ‘I am
writing to remind you that as an owner/manager of a shared house the above Management
Regulations place a duty on you to, among other things, maintain the property in good
order. During my inspection I noted fire precaution issues, a mouse infestation, poor
decoration and disrepair. This represents an offence under the regulations'. Subsequently,
the tenants are now pursuing their grievance via the Property Ombudsman.
The other purpose of this direct action public campaign was to draw attention to how
systemic such mistreatment is, and to help, in whatever way useful, tenants to find one
another and to fight back. In this sense, insofar as the campaign has allowed G4Lets
tenants to connect with one another, we think it has made some gains. We would like to
build on this, and so we will be staging a know your rights workshop for tenants at 2pm on
Sunday 22nd April at Phoenix Community Centre, covering issues such as deposit theft, damp
and mould, and disrepair. We don't claim to be experts on any of this or to have a
monopoly on it, but we do have some battle-won knowledge of how to stop some of the most
dubious tactics that agencies use. We thought it could be useful to share this knowledge,
as well as to have a general discussion about ways that we as tenants can deal with the
scams and swindles of agencies.
One thing that the campaign has highlighted is the extent to which agencies like G4Lets
rely on exploiting students who may not be aware of all of their rights as a tenant.
G4Lets were (just about) able to survive a direct action public campaign. But how will
dodgy agencies cope with tenants that are keenly aware of their rights? We don't think
they will be able to cope with tenants working together to spot and put a stop to their
tricks and dodgy tactics. Any tenants who would like to come along to the workshop are
warmly welcome to.
Whilst we have concluded this particular campaign against G4Lets, we have not concluded
our efforts to help bring about a world where letting agencies have been abolished -
starting with dodgy practices by agencies like G4Lets.

The porn industry is changing, in its means of production, in its means of diffusion. Yet
female pornography remains in its infancy. ---- In the 1980s in the United States, a new
feminist movement known as " pro-sex " emerged . From the queer world, these feminists
will fight the essentialist theory that sex and gender are clearly defined. For them,
pornography becomes a political tool for the sexual liberation of women. Transgressive, it
would sweep away the moral values of traditional society and highlight underrepresented
sexual minorities. ---- Opposite, radical feminists (led by Andrea Dworkin among others)
who see pornography as an instrument of expression of patriarchy favoring violent sexual
acts through the creation of degrading fantasies for women.
Because it is indisputable that the place of women in the vast majority of X films is
problematic. The woman, although at the center of the action, exists only for the pleasure
phallic, enslaved to the desires of the man. Focusing on certain parts of her body
(breasts, buttocks ...) only accentuates her reification, putting her in the field of
consumables, always consenting even if she says " no ".
A cinema enslaved to major capitalist productions
Nevertheless, according to recent polls, almost half of women say they are ready to watch
adult movies and more than a third are watching regularly. Thus it would become necessary
to develop a female pornography, alternative, revalorizing the body of women and their
pleasures, and taking into account sexual minorities. The idea would be to make a film
made by women for women in order to get rid of worn out positions such as the fact that
women have fewer desires than men or that they can only enjoy themselves in a reciprocal
way. feelings. Especially not rosy scenarios, necessarily heterosexual: it is not to
denounce the clichés carried by the male X to recreate others but to position themselves
closer to the current desires feminine.
Yet today the word " pornography " still bugs, a woman loving sex is too often described
as slut, filmmakers feminist X like Ovidie are a hundred. The landscape of the
contemporary X remains enslaved to major capitalist productions and mainly conveys the
vision of a woman subject to man. Let's hope, however, that someday, this type of feminist
cinema will become the norm, that the public will no longer be exclusively feminine but
that universalism will be achieved, in full respect of the sexes.

Kurdish militias have not managed to keep on their own. Faced with the firepower of
Ankara, they agreed to a return of troops from Damascus to the besieged township. Afrîn
will live. But will it preserve its democratic autonomy ? ---- ' Ayn al-Arab was the
Stalingrad Daech, Afrin will be Vietnam Erdogan ' : this slogan out of the bowels of the
Kurdish movement and its revolutionary allies, sends a powerful imagination: the defeat of
III e Reich at Stalingrad in 1943, beginning of the end for Hitler ; then the Vietnamese
people's victory over the US steamroller in the 1970s. ---- The situation is actually more
complicated for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the Arab-Kurdish alliance of which the
People's Protection Units (YPG) and the Women's Protection Units (YPJ) are the backbone.
Especially since, on February 19, they accepted the entry of Bashar al-Assad's troops in
the Afrin canton to face the Turkish offensive. Bashar who has nothing of a friend since,
twelve days ago, he had just taken advantage of the Turkish offensive to attempt an
assault against the FDS in the region of Deir ez-Zor ! But in Afrîn, once again, the
Kurdish left made a choice with their back to the wall.
Although it has been weakened by the purges of the staff that followed the failed coup in
the summer of 2016, the Turkish military remains formidable: the 8 th in the world in
terms of staff , and 2 nd NATO: 380 000 active military, 360 000 reserve [1], 400 fighter
jets, 7,500 armored combat vehicles and more than 2,400 tanks ... However, it limited its
commitment to ground, providing above all air support to his backup troops, the 25,000 men
of the Free Syrian Army (ASL) engaged in the operation.
Afrîn's assets
However, other factors come into play. First of all Afrîn is a mountainous canton, easy to
defend, and that the Kurds have fortified for nearly six years pending the attack. Then,
the FDS have been fighting throughout their campaign against Daesh. Finally, the SDS can
receive reinforcements via a " corridor " under the control of the Damascus regime. In one
of his blog posts, our comrade Damien Keller tells how Syrian officers filtered
reinforcements sent to Afrîn, trying to separate Kurds from Arabs and Europeans [2].
Result, despite its overwhelming military superiority, the aggressor did not win the
victory. At 30 th day of the offensive, he was grabbed by only 8% of the township, nearly
30 villages at a cost of 238 dead (including 37 Turkish soldiers), against 197 deaths
among the defenders of Afrin, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Bachar, a killer to the rescue
Despite this fierce defense, the Kurdish lines of defense seemed to reach the threshold of
rupture. On February 19, the SDF command resigned itself to accepting a demand from
Damascus and Moscow: to let Bashar al-Assad's troops enter the canton to defend the
territorial integrity of Syria. The calculation was that by accepting Syrian troops'
involvement, Moscow was encouraged to ban airspace from Turkish aviation, which would ruin
the Ankara offensive. The big problem is that by doing so, we let the wolf enter the
sheepfold. Bashar al-Assad's next objective will be to destroy the Democratic Federation
of Northern Syria, of which Afrin is a pillar.
The dirty game of the imperialists
It is certain that the motivation for the Turkish attack, beyond the anti-PKK hatred, is
Erdogan's desire to consolidate a nationalist electoral bloc around him. But his party,
the AKP, seems divided on this campaign: if Erdogan pushes for total war - at least in
speeches - others, such as the Prime Minister or the Minister of the Economy, talk about
an intervention limited to a few months. It is difficult to estimate the real support for
this intervention, because any discordant voice is brutally repressed. But this
nationalist and authoritarian runaway may end up turning against Erdogan. Since the
beginning of the Turkish offensive, the allies of the coalition that had helped the FDS
against Daesh have, as expected, shone by their absence. Paris, Washington and others have
condemned the excesses, but never the aggression itself. It appears, however, that the
United States will not abandon its support in northeastern Syria, including Manbij.
Bashar al-Assad, he can only welcome the situation: in favor of this clash between his
opponents, the troops of Damascus have regained foot in the canton of Afrîn. As for Putin,
who had given the green light to Turkish aggression, would he be losing control of the
situation ? His multi-party conference in Sochi in late January was a total failure. And
as new fronts emerge - after Afrîn, the tension rises between Israel and Iran - the
prospect of a pax russia in Syria moves away.
Make Erdogan pay
It is clear that the role of revolutionary organizations is not to try to influence one or
the other of the imperialist states that defend their interests in this game of
international dupes. But at our level we can add to the cost of this offensive for Ankara.
There are three weak points in Europe on which to push: weaken the tourism industry, which
is one of the pillars of Turkish GDP ; target the economic interests of the Erdogan clan ;
aim at its military-industrial complex which is dependent on Europe. Only through
political and concrete solidarity can we influence this fight.

October 3, 2016 Thousands of people protested against the civic bill by Ordo Iuris, a
completely forbidden abortion, came to the streets of many Polish cities. Demonstrations
organized under the name Czarny Protest had a major impact not only in Poland, but also in
foreign media. Solidarity protests were also organized, among others in Italy, Germany,
the Czech Republic, Norway, China and Canada. There was also no repression directed
against the anarchist environment. ---- Direct actions in Kielce and Kraków ---- The
organization of the Black protest was also attended by anarchists and anarchists. ----
Speaking, they emphasized the links between capitalism and patriarchy. In a similar vein,
the slogans placed on banners and trip posts prepared by anarchist organizations were also
maintained. Several direct actions were carried out. A homophobic "exhibition" organized
by the Life and Family Foundation was destroyed in Kielce. Photos which, with the consent
of, among others the city's vice-president Andrzej Sygut, shown on the market square in
Kielce, has been marked with slogans such as: "Homosexuality seriously harms life and
health" or "Pedophilia is associated with homosexuality". The "exhibition" was broken and
cut by activists and activists participating in the Black Protest. The Life and Family
Foundation has therefore prosecuted against 4 people. One of the Kielce anarchists
received a default judgment in the form of a PLN 380 fine for the destruction of the
homophobic "exhibition". The case was pending against the rest of the accused. The same
foundation accused the anarchist of destroying this "exhibition" by sticking an anarchist
sticker. On March 16, the last hearing was held, culminating in a conviction. Anarchist
received a penalty of PLN 100 + PLN 30 court costs. The other defendants had to pay a
total of PLN 500 fine, including part of the Life and Family foundation. ended with a
conviction. Anarchist received a penalty of PLN 100 + PLN 30 court costs. The other

In Krakow, on the other hand, a symbolic squat was created - a vacancy belonging to the
Catholic church was seized. There were black flags and a banner with the slogan "House
taken out of the church's power. Women's strike. A manifesto entitled 'Our wombs' was
nailed to the front door! Our streets! Our tenement houses! The treasurer's strike now! "
Clashes with the police in Poznan
Poznan's Black Protest after the official part also had a spontaneous continuation under
the PiS office on Sw. Marcin. People gathered there sang "Szydlo, unfortunately, your
government will overthrow women" and chanted slogans such as "Solidarity with our arms",
"This is a warning strike". At one point there was a slight scuffle with the police, which
mindlessly pressed against the rising crowd of people. In the end, smoke and firecrackers
flew to the uniforms. The police lost their domination and invaded the crowd by kicking
and hitting random people with batons and firing blindly from the gas. The whole situation
was extremely dynamic and chaotic. This chaos, mainly due to its unskillful and dangerous
behavior, was deepened by the police. Many people turned down fleeing from aggressive
officers, and many more stumbled over them and also fell. This situation was used by the
uniform trying to get people lying on the ground out of the crowd. Many of them managed to
"save" from the police, thanks to the solidary attitude of other protesters.
Unfortunately, not everyone was so lucky. Three people were detained - all connected with
the Poznan anarchist community. Two of them were fished out when they would run to help
those fallen to the ground. Immediately after the events on Sw. Marcin, about 200 people,
organized a solidarity campaign at the police station on Al. Marcinkowski, where detainees
were detained. Everyone was released on the second day. They were accused of participating
in the gathering, "knowing that its participants commit a violent attack on a person or
property by common forces" and by violating the inviolability of a physical policeman.
Three are not enough
Three participants of the Black Protest, present during the demonstration under the PiS
office, filed a complaint against police actions. A complaint from an elderly woman who,
as a result of being beaten by the police, lost consciousness and was hospitalized, was
rejected. The complaints of the other two participants were also rejected, but returned to
the prosecutor's office. The court ordered their reconsideration, because according to his
knowledge, the prosecutor's office did not take all the steps necessary for their proper
consideration. It did not help much, because ultimately the prosecutor's office did not
detect any irregularities in the behavior of the police. The accused and the accused have
received a curious justification for rejecting the complaint, which we will discuss in a
separate text.
The advocate filed a complaint against this decision. We are currently awaiting the
prosecution's reaction, although we know of course how it will be. From the very beginning
it was clear that the complaint would be rejected - police abuse is almost never taken
seriously and ultimately the prosecutor's office, in matters related to the anarchist
environment, always rejects it. In this particular case, however, something more happened
- the activists making the complaint and the person who was given as a witness received
the status of the accused. They were not detained earlier, but the prosecutor's office
found it sufficient that they were on the spot during the protest. In this way, six of the
accused have become six and an absurd situation has occurred: there is a reasonable risk
that people who would be accused by defendants to call as defense witnesses will also be
prosecuted! So how are we to defend ourselves? that the complaint will be rejected -
