Join the Troll Patrol Join Now › Dear friends, We believe everyone should be able to express themselves online without fear, and we want social media companies like Twitter to do more to protect women from this abuse. Online violence and abuse is more than just a mere annoyance. For girls and young women who have grown up with Twitter—and social media platforms—our research finds that the silencing impact of online violence and abuse risks normalizing the idea that women expressing an opinion will be met with violence and abuse. This is not only worrying, but serves to negate girls’ future political and civic participation online. That’s why we’re launching the Troll Patrol—a platform for digital volunteers where we will use our collective power to track abusive and violent tweets. As a member of the Troll Patrol, you will help Amnesty researchers analyze 500,000 tweets sent to women politicians, journalists and activists. While Twitter says it’s trying to tackle online abuse, it just isn’t doing enough. It won’t tell us how much abuse women report on Twitter, nor will it say how it responds to those reports. If Twitter doesn’t measure this problem, how can we help fix it? This is where you come in. Join our movement of digital volunteers exposing sexist, racist and other abuse against women on Troll Patrol. Use your computer or phone and dedicate as little as 30 seconds to detect rampant online abuse. We will give you a quick training on the site. Your research will then be verified and pieced together with thousands of other people’s work. The project is live, and it’s so easy.
