Recently Astrid, a 15-year-old girl who fled violence in her home country of Guatemala, was awoken by six armed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents standing before her bed, yelling. She had gone to bed the night before expecting—as always—to go to school the next day. Instead she watched as her father Arturo was placed in handcuffs. They were then brought to the Berks County Residential Center in Pennsylvania with Astrid still in her pajamas. The Rapid Response Network moved to action. Over just one week activists like you drove over 1,600 calls to ICE demanding Astrid and Arturo’s release. After a month in detention Astrid was released and able to go back to school.
