London Anarchist Communist Group will be running a bookstall at the London Radical
Bookfair at Goldsmiths University, 81 Lewisham Way, London SE14 on Saturday 2nd June. In
addition it will be holding the following meeting at the Bookfair. ---- Land and Liberty
‘Land and liberty' has been a key anarchist slogan through-out the world. This is because
without land, one cannot survive, and without liberty, we cannot live. Though often
associated with peasant struggles, the struggle for land is as much as issue today in
urban areas as it is in the haciendas of Latin America. All our struggles in the city are
arise because we do not have control and access to land. Houses, food, community and
social spaces, parks and open spaces all are at the mercy of whoever owns the land. And
this is extremely unequal. Although a majority of us have a small stake in the 5% of UK
land upon which our housing is built, the majority of land (70%) in the UK is owned by
just 0.6% of the population. But even land owned by the government is not land controlled
by us. Think of Grenfell and the lack of control residents had over their homes that were
meant to be in public ownership. Think of the land owned by the Forestry Commission and
the Ministry of Defence.

This talk will discuss why demands for land justice need to be at the heart of our
struggles, both to have common ownership but also liberty to organise how we use the land
for the benefit of all. There will be some historical and international examples as well
as examples from London.

Norwich and Cambridge too
The ACG are also having a stall at Norwich Anarchist Bookfair on Sunday 6th May from 2pm
at Bedfords Crypt, 1 Old Post Office Yard, Bedford Street, Norwich and at Cambridge
Radical Bookfair 1pm to 5pm Sunday 17th June at Portland Arms, Chesterton Road. See our

In Fougères as elsewhere, the will to work around feminist issues is increasing. ---- A
group of fifteen people, composed of residents and activists of LA and insubordinate
France, had organized last year an action to raise awareness of the issues of sexism. We
had renamed the streets, since only 10  % of them had a woman's name. This action allowed
that many streets are then named by the names of women in the town of Fougères. Certainly,
the activists we put forward have not been selected, in favor of sports ; but the streets
are today a little more mixed ... ---- On Fougères, as on many cities of this size, the
actions of March 8 are often carried by institutions that focus primarily on a cultural or
historical side, and depoliticize this day. The current aspects (wage inequality, violence
against women and harassment, reactionary pushes, questioning of the right to abortion
...) being then little discussed, and the feminist demands nonexistent. This is why
militant groups have their place, in order to bring political questions and prevent this
day from becoming a commemoration, tinged with some contemporary aspects.

Forty people, mostly women, participated in the organization of 8 March 2018, with a goal
of prevention around sexist issues through a street vendor reporting testimonials. Actions
supported by forty people during the day, which took place in three different places.

Collective recovery
This year, the desire to have a feminist speaking space and organization on the city was
also named by several members of the group. If 8 March is part of the objectives of the
feminist group, it evolves into a permanent group and allows to organize awareness-raising
actions (against sexist ads, to make some institutions rename, such as kindergartens,
maternal and child ...). It also aims to develop prevention centers that are not
institutional, such as family planning, or to organize conferences.

In March, AL Fougères also carried out numerous awareness-raising activities, through
public meetings, on gender and education, and on women and self-management. The existence
of the feminist group allowed to go beyond the militant framework, as well as inhabitants
and inhabitants to get involved.

The spontaneous birth of this feminist group is indicative of a desire to take collective
control of these issues and to advance them, particularly by women. When one can
legitimately be concerned about the visibility of reactionary groups, this effect is
counterbalanced by the fact that many women want to become involved in feminist issues today.

The world of state and capitalism can not respond to real social needs and has nothing to
promise but more misery, poverty, oppression, cannibalism, war and death. ---- The warfare
in the capitalist region and the involvement of more and more forces radically change the
geopolitical map of the region. The warring societies, fueling regional nationalisms, and
the idea of a great war that is approaching ever closer to the establishment of the state
of emergency and upgrading social control and repression in Western societies while the
very Treaty of War destroys and murders the Middle East ---- 132 years after the rebellion
of the Chicago workers, the project of linking the few and demanding struggles with the
overall social and political demand to overthrow the world of power and the libertarian
transformation of society remains always up to date.

He Zhen was an early 20th century Chinese Anarchist, noted for her contributions to
feminist thought in that part of the world. ---- She was born He Ban in China in 1884. She
married Liu Shipei, described as one of the two most important Chinese anarchists by
historian Peter Zarrow. In 1904 they moved to Tokyo, where she then took the name He Zhen
(Thunderclap). ---- She was a mainstay of the Chinese anarchist group in Tokyo and a major
contributor to the journal Tianyee (Natural Justice), which published in the two years
1907-1908, as well as to the weekly Paris journal, Xin Shiji (New Century or New Era),
which was produced to introduce Chinese students in France, Japan, and China to the
history of European radicalism. ---- She and her husband both wrote under pen names, and
many of her articles were misattributed to Liu, although in fact she is considered to be
more radical than her husband. He Zhen also founded the Women's Rights Recovery
Association (Nüzi Fuquan Hui), which called for the use of force to end male oppression of
women as well as resistance to the ruling class and capitalists and promised that it would
come to the aid of any member oppressed by her husband or attempting to resist male
domination in any way.

She published a number of strong attacks in anarchist journals on male social power and
argued that society could not be free without the liberation of women. He Zhen advocation
of women's liberation was a particularly pressing concern in China, where foot-binding and
concubinage were still common practices.

Her essay "On The Question Of Women's Liberation," which appeared in Tianyi in 1907, opens
by declaring that, "for thousands of years, the world has been dominated by the rule of
man. This rule is marked by class distinctions over which men-and men only-exert
proprietary rights. To rectify the wrongs, we must first abolish the rule of men and
introduce equality among human beings, which means that the world must belong equally to
men and women. The goal of equality cannot be achieved except through women's liberation."1

He Zehn wanted more than the gains that she saw women in the West demanding and obtaining
such the right to vote. She wanted revolution not reforms. For her liberation for women
was only achievable by the liberation of society as a whole.

She firmly linked women's liberation to the notion of revolution, and the remodelling of
society in terms of economic and class. She saw women were uniquely oppressed and
recognised that there were cultural forces as well as economic forces at play in the
oppression of women, but she considered that these would be solved in the course of the
anarchist revolution. For her the roots of oppression lay in the economic system, and the
solution was to be found in the anarcho-communist doctrine of "To each according to need".

She detailed this idea more in a work entitled "What Women Should Know About Communism".2
Here she wrote:

"My fellow women: do not hate men! Hate that you do not have food to eat. Why don't you
have any food? It is because you don't have any money to buy food. Why don't you have any
money? It is because the rich have stolen our property. They have forced the majority of
people into poverty and starvation. Look at the wives and daughters in the government
offices and mansions. They live extravagantly with no worries about having enough to eat.
Why are you worried every day about starving to death? The poor are people just as the
rich are. Think about it for yourselves; this ought to produce some disquieting feelings...

"I have a good idea that will exempt you from relying on others while still finding food
naturally. How? By practicing communism. Think of all the things in the world. They were
either produced by nature or by individual labor. Why can rich people buy them but poor
people cannot? It is because the world trades with money. It is because people seize the
things they have bought with money for their exclusive use. If every single woman
understands that nothing is more evil than money, and they all unite together to cooperate
with men to utterly overthrow the rich and powerful and then abolish money, then
absolutely nothing will be allowed for individuals to own privately. Everything from food
to clothes and tools will be put in a place where people - men and women alike, as long as
they perform a little labor - can take however much of whatever they want just like taking
water from the ocean. This is called communism. At this time, not only will we be free of
depending on others for food to eat, but also the food will all be good to eat. It will be
possible to have good things to wear, good things to use, and good things to play with.
Think about it: will this be a better future or not? I am not lying to you. If we only
unite together, with this method[communism]we can naturally have a good future. There is
no doubt about it. As we say colloquially, "the good times are coming." This is what I
have to say today."

The last years of He Zhen's life are a mystery. He Zhen and Liu had returned to China in
1909, but following Liu's death from tuberculosis in 1919, she was rumored to have become
a Buddhist nun and ordained under the name Xiao Qi.
