Message: 1
In the countries where the International Workers' Associations (IWA) sections and
associations work, their members recalled on May 1, mainly their fighting character, and
called for the self-organization of workers. ---- Australia ---- The traditional meeting
of the anarchists took place at the memorial of the fight for eight hours of work. The
participants expressed their sympathy especially to Spanish friends, who are being
persecuted by both the power and the reformists. ---- Bangladesh ---- The Bangladeshi
anarcho-syndicalist organization organized a discussion meeting and demonstration, and
then organized a large-scale Slate meeting with other organizations. The speech explained
the origin and content of the term syndicalism and the principle of combating
authoritarianism and authorities. And it also talked about specific local workplaces where
the fight for workers' rights must be started.
Brazil
Brazilian anarchists held May Day events in a number of cities. There was not just a
concert in Porto Alegre, where a heavy rainfall made it impossible to put the equipment
into operation. In the largest city of Brazil, Sao Paulo, the anarcho-syndicalists in the
center of the city have been shown under the motto "Against Unemployment and Wage
Reduction". They demand shortened working hours to six hours a day and thirty hours a week
(without lowering salaries), guaranteeing a minimum wage of 4500 realities, and
implementing agrarian reform (land-use, collectivisation and self-government). A
demonstration against repression and over-riding took place in Arax.
Britain
The May Day events also took place in various cities in the UK. In Brighton on the Jubilee
Square, the anarcho-syndicalists remembered the roots of the workers' and anarchist
movement at a meeting called First May Overcame. The idea of the event was to strengthen
mutual support among working, unemployed and tenants of apartments under the slogan
"Conflicts are different, the exploiter only".
Bulgaria
The Anarcho-Syndicists and their followers organized the May Day march in Varna under the
slogan: "Today is not a holiday, but a day of struggle!" The speech called for people to
unite in the fight against employability, low wages and poor working conditions.
France
The activists of the French CNT-AIT participated in the May Day trials in a number of
cities and organized their own events. In Toulouse they screened the film about May 1968
and discussed the repression of the rebellious workers.
Indie
In Bhopal, central India, the anarchists recalled the anarchist roots of the First May,
and the importance of the movement in the struggle for the rights of the working class all
over the world. They also expressed solidarity with the specific fighting in India, where
it was just that day that strikes for better working conditions, higher wages and layoffs.
Indonesia
Numerous anarchist demonstrations took place in Jakarta, Surabaya and Bandung. Anarchists
in the capital attacked members of the reactionary trade union KSPSI, the former official
trade union organization of the Suhart regime.
Colombia
Activists of the Libertarian Student Union ULE gathered at nine o'clock in Bogotá and
under the black-and-red battalions passed through the streets to remind Chicago's events
in 1886 and other war victims for social liberation.
Germany
Under the black-and-red flags, events took place in Bonn and Dortmund. In Bonn, several
hundred people met on a demonstration of a global unconditional basic income. In Dortmund,
the anarchist march through the center in the afternoon under the slogan "For the world
without wage labor".
Norway
Anarchists gave out flyers at the First May in Oslo, which talked about the current
"official" unions that are unable and willing to fight for the interests of the workers,
and therefore anarcho-syndicalist struggle is essential to put an effective resistance of
capital and state.
Polish
Union of Syndicalists of Poland The ZSP organized a series of events in different cities.
Information meeting for young service workers was organized in Wroclaw. In Lodz,
anarchists revered the memory of Chicago martyrs and all workers who perished in the
struggle for freedom, dignity and social justice. They also expressed solidarity with
friends who blocked the Fascist march in Warsaw. There have been clashes with both
nationalists and the police.
Portugal
Anarchist flags hatched in Lisbon in the march of the student movement Cancela and Propina.
Russia
In Moscow, Mayday's anarchist events were banned this year, and individuals were involved
in the procession of left-wing groups, polled leaflets around the city, and organized an
anarchist picnic.
Serbia
The Anarcho-Syndicalist Initiative of ASI was spreading the First Declaration in which it
stressed that First May is not a feast and celebration of "left" parties and bureaucratic
unions, but a day of remarks of hard struggles working for common interests.
Spain
A demonstration took place in Granada on the topic "Self-organization of the working
class: solidarity and struggle!". The city's march was completed with a cultural program.
The action was supported by a number of anarchist organizations, including the Black Sheep.
In Andalusian Cadiz, a meeting organized by the CNT-AIT branches of Cádiz and Chiclan was
held under the motto "Organize and fight! More than ever: Anarchosyndicalism. Solidarity -
Mutual Assistance - Direct Action ". The speeches, inter alia, have shown that the power
of repression against the anarchist movement since the time of the Chicago strike has not
yet ceased that the policy of the so-called workers' parties is directed against the
workers, and the result is the loss of a number of rights fought in the past. There was a
call to revive revolutionary syndicalism and lost class consciousness.
Manifestation and meeting in Alicante accompanied the blockade of streets related to labor
conflicts in a company operating urban transport. Despite the efforts of the police to
divert the march, everything was done according to the original plan and without
incidents. There were talks about the political, economic and social problems faced by
wage-earners.
Other Spanish May Day events took place, for example, in Albacete, Barcelona or Madrid. He
went through the town under the slogan "Work to Everyone for Less".
Sweden
Regardless of the rain and the strong wind, a massive May Day march took place in Malmö.
USA
The Alliance of Solidarity Workers, WSA, has been spreading on this day a First Booklet
and a number of other agitational materials.
