Jailed for Reporting a Massacre

Demand Justice for These Journalists
Dear friends,
Yesterday was World Press Freedom Day. It’s a day when we celebrate the benefits of a free press for people around the world. We also take our time to celebrate the people who work in journalism, who constantly put their lives on the line to gather information that changes lives.

Journalism is a peaceful act of bringing information to light, and for the Rohingya crisis it is essential. The ongoing military campaign against Rohingya Muslims has been called “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing” by the United Nations.

In Myanmar there has been an erosion of the space for a free press, where journalists and other media workers face ongoing restrictions in connection with their work. Two Reuters journalists, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, were arrested in December and are facing up to fourteen years in prison for reporting on the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar’s Rakhine state.

Journalists in Myanmar don’t deserve to face harassment and intimidation: ask for the immediate release of Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo now.

Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo’s arrest appears to be aimed at preventing them, as well as other journalists, from independently reporting on the Rohingya crisis. Myanmar authorities have banned United Nations investigators from entering the country, so journalists like Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo are essential to our global knowledge about the crisis in Myanmar.

This violation of a free press must stop: ask the government of Myanmar to release Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo now.

Yesterday was a reminder to governments of the need to respect press freedom. Help us remind the government of Myanmar that press freedom is essential, and journalists like Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo must be released immediately.
