Governments the world over want to control the media – without an inconveniently free press, officials find it easier to do what they want. They can squander national assets on mansions abroad, forcibly disappear opponents, and hide infectious disease outbreaks. 
Shah Marai, a photographer for Agence France Presse who took the above photo, was one of nine journalists who died at the hands of a suicide bomber in Afghanistan this week.
