Dear friends,
A group of fundamentalist Christians here in Germany is offering seminars and "therapies" claiming they can "fix" lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans people.
According to a recent media report, the Association for Life Orientation (LEO) has been regularly running seminars where LGBT+ people are told they have "mental disorders".
Our country's Minister of Health, Jens Spahn, is an openly gay man himself – and has the power to actually stop this.
The recent report on LEO's activities has exposed this crisis. Now, if thousands of us speak out, we can push Minister Spahn to take action and help ban "conversion therapies" – sometimes also referred to as gay "cures" – in Germany once and for all.
"Conversion therapies" are so damaging that the World Medical Association has publicly denounced them as "a violation of human rights". There's overwhelming evidence that these practices can cause traumatic harm.
Still, only a few countries have banned these dangerous practices. Despite being progressive in many ways, Germany is surprisingly not one of them.
In 2016, Malta became the first European country to ban "conversion therapies". Anyone found guilty of trying to change someone's sexual orientation faces fines or jail time.
If Germany does the same, it could have a massive impact on the rest of Europe, with other countries following our lead and protecting thousands of LGBT+ people across the continent.
Thanks for going All Out!
Sören Landmann,
Aktionsbündnis gegen Homophobie e.V.
