The finding is alarming. The damage to biodiversity continues to grow. And the speed of 
this collapse is accelerating. Let's take a brief look at some recent scientific studies. 
---- Year after year, scientific data accumulate and all go in the same direction: 
biodiversity collapses on all lands and seas. First, there is the work of the 
Intergovernmental Science and Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services 
(IPBES), created in 2012 and whose sixth session was held from 17 to 24 March 2018 in 
Medellin (Colombia). ---- His reports point out, for example, that in Africa some 500 000 
km2 of land are already degraded due to deforestation, unsustainable agriculture, 
overgrazing, mining activities, invasive species or global warming.

In Asia Pacific, biodiversity is facing unprecedented threats. Today, 60% of Asian 
grasslands are degraded, nearly 25% of endemic plant and animal species are threatened.

In the Americas, the populations of animal and native plant species decreased by 31% since 
European settlement, and this rate could rise to 40% in the middle of the XXI th century.

In Europe and Central Asia, the situation is not much better: 42% of terrestrial animals 
and plants have recorded a decline in their populations during the last decade, as well as 
71% of fish and 60% of amphibians.

Returning to Europe, two recent studies give an alarmist view of the situation: "   In 
less than three decades, insect populations have probably fallen by almost 80% in Europe. 
This is suggested by an international study published Wednesday October 18 by the journal 
PLoS One, analyzing data of insect captures made since 1989 in Germany  ; it also shows 
that the decline of bees, highly publicized by the beekeeping world, is only the emergence 
of a much larger problem  " ( Le Monde, 18 October 2017).

An unprecedented extinction since the dinosaurs
The National Museum of Natural History (MNHN) and the National Center for Scientific 
Research (CNRS) announced Tuesday, March 20, 2018, the main results of two bird monitoring 
networks in France: "   The birds of the French countryside disappear at a vertiginous 
speed[...]. On average, their populations have shrunk by a third in fifteen years   " ( Le 
Monde, March 20, 2018). The decline observed is particularly marked since 2008-2009, "   a 
period which corresponds, among other things, to the end of the fallow periods imposed by 
the[European]common agricultural policy,[...]and to the generalization of neonicotinoids 
".A study conducted by the universities of East Anglia (United Kingdom) and James-Cook 
(Australia) published in Climatic Change magazine Wednesday, March 14, 2018 establishes an 
irrevocable conclusion: if global warming continues, nearly 50% of species currently 
living in the most biodiverse regions will be threatened with local extinction by the 
2080s ( Le Monde, 14 March 2018).

A region like the Amazon, which is home to more than 10% of all known species on Earth and 
plays a key role in the regulation of the global climate, is likely to disappear, 
depending on the scenario of climate change, between 40% and 70% of its plants and mammals.

As stated by IPBES reports, "   the Earth is undergoing its sixth mass extinction[...]. 
Disappearances of species have been multiplied by 100 since 1900, an unprecedented rate 
since the extinction of the dinosaurs 66 million years ago   " ( Le Monde 23 March 2018).
