After ripping children from their parents at the US border, US President Donald Trump has pivoted to a new policy -- detaining families together indefinitely. Detaining families still means jailing children. Also, the new order puts detained families in the custody of the US Defense Department. But the armed forces aren’t child care providers, and they shouldn’t have to be. Human Rights Watch’s Michael Garcia Bochenek recently visited immigration detention centers in McAllen, Texas. “I talked to a cheerful 5-year-old boy and his mother. They’d crossed into the US seeking safety after fleeing violence and threats at home. Later that day, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents took him away from his mother. The next day he told me: ‘I don’t know where she is.’” Trump’s new order unfortunately likely won’t change anything for this boy or the 2,300 or more children torn from their parents’ arms. We don’t know how or if the government will reunify the thousands already separated.
Authorities have arrested two more women’s rights activists in recent days in what appears to be an unrelenting crackdown on the women’s rights movement.
