Last weekend, two-thirds of Irish people voted to repeal a 35-year-old constitutional ban on abortion. Voters turned out in historic numbers. Their ‘Yes’ vote ends 35 years of shame and secrecy for Irish women and girls.
Human Rights Watch's Aisling Reidy discusses what it was like watching her home country take this historic step, and the long, sometimes hazardous road Irish women have endured to get here.
Activists elsewhere, in other regions such as Latin America – where women and girls continue to fight for access to abortion – watched as Ireland voted. Will their efforts be bolstered by Ireland's victory for women's rights?
