DIRECT DEMOCRACY is when organized workers and workers fight against government and boss,
for our rights and for a better life. ---- Governments and employers together have
attacked workers with many anti-people measures, such as the withdrawal of labor rights
and the scrapping of public services such as education and health, which make our work
even heavier and more difficult. ---- Some unions seek to appease the conflicts and stop
the fighting by thinking about their electoral power games, their interests at the polls
(indirect democracy). In this sense, we can say that today, in Brazil, the type of
hegemonic syndicalism avoids at all costs the exercise of direct democracy. Decisions are
always taken by the top leadership and pushed down the base. Thus, these leaders, who are
often driven by personal or partisan-electoral interests, end up stifling initiatives of
direct democracy and surrendering the rights of the workers in the name of their own wills.
When we rebel against all this and choose how to fight, this is direct democracy. We do
this with strong strikes, shutdowns, lockups, pickets, occupations, etc ... The workers
are collectively the ones who must decide how best to fight. With rebellion, resistance
and class solidarity.
That is how many workers and workers before us have won 8-hour days, better wages,
childcare leave, better working conditions among other things. No right has been given to
us by governments, let alone bosses. It was we who conquered them with struggle and
organization. And that is how we can defend and expand our rights. If they get rich when
they exploit us, it's always legitimate when we stand up and revolt against it.
We must assume that our voice has to be heard and that no one represents us better than
ourselves.

Last week, Saman, the largest rice company in Uruguay, confirmed the dismissal of 33
workers from the city of Rio Branco (border with Jaguarão). The company with more than 30
years has another 7 industrial plants throughout the country. Since receiving the news of
the layoffs, the workers are kept busy at the two plants in Rio Branco. According to them,
at no time was there any dialogue on the part of the employers, and they only learned of
the situation when they arrived at work last Friday 31/08 and they came across the closed
doors. ---- Saman's justification, issued by note, claims that in recent years production
has dropped by 30% of the volume of rice and that the area sown is the lowest in the last
25 years. However, the workers claim that there are about 15 tons of rice and 20 tons of
soybeans stored in the silos and that there is still much work to be done with this
production, and there is no need for layoffs. In addition to much work, Saman was bought
in 2007 by the Brazilian company Camil Alimentos, the third largest rice processor in the
world, which in 2017 had a net profit of more than R $ 206.5 million, a growth of 24% in
relation the previous year. The company Camil also owns brands like União e Coqueiro.
The policy adopted by the company called "reduction of financial expenses" translates into
the precariousness of the work and the dismissal of the 33 employees of the Saman company
in Rio Branco, impacting the income of many families. According to the workers who occupy
the site, Saman at the same time that he fired his employees, bets on the outsourcing of
the work, admitting 6 employees who would work doing the maintenance of the place. This
perverse logic aims less and less the responsibility of companies with their workers,
lower wages and withdrawal of rights won through much struggle.
The workers who occupy the place require dialogue on the part of the company, an
explanation of how resignation and the restitution of jobs have taken place, as they claim
that there are grains to be processed throughout the year and there is no justification
for the 33 workers being dismissed The FOEMIA (Federation of Workers and Employees
Molineros and Allied) that has delegates of the category, affirms that next to the workers
will not vacate the place until the company talks with all.
Through the pressure and the example of struggle and resistance by the 33 workers, there
will be a negotiation meeting on Wednesday in Montevideo. The aim is to restore the jobs
of all who have been dismissed, as it is the only way to support many families of the 33
Saman workers. The minister of labor, Ernesto Murro, claims that because it is a private
company, there should be no interference in the case and makes its political campaign in
favor of large companies.
We point out the perversity of the productive logic of agribusiness that goes beyond
borders and is directly related to labor relations. The rural areas are taken by a
corporate culture that overwhelms everything in the name of profit. This model of
large-scale production to compete on the price of monoculture and transgenics at the
expense of the destruction of natural resources, the exploitation of workers and the
expulsion, persecution and death of indigenous people, quilombolas, landless workers and
small producers. Large-scale production of corn, soybeans and rice, for example, impairs
biodiversity, consumes water excessively and wears soil, among other impacts.
Instead of dividing the land for more people to produce healthy food, the elites who own
astronomical extensions of land expand action and successive governments, including the
"left", finance agribusiness as never before, favoring national and foreign entrepreneurs
who bank their political campaigns and crushing small producers. This productive model is
a lot of work exploitation, very pesticides, little education, a lot of land
concentration, a lot of environmental devastation.
From the point of view of labor relations, in the monoculture there is a reduction of
labor and consequent rural exodus. The businessmen of agribusiness multinationals work
together with governments to "modernize" (ie precarious) labor, environmental, tax and
indigenist legislation to ensure agribusiness criminal activity. Rural workers suffer from
the withdrawal of rights, with outsourcing, with the poisoning by unrestrained use of
agrochemicals and accidents at work in agricultural warehouses. Outsourcing will only make
matters worse and precarious labor relations. Agro is enemies of the workers, of the
traditional populations, quilombolas, without land.
Faced with this perverse situation, we offer all solidarity to the 33 workers who are
occupying the plantations

In the left hand, Macron promises a carrot to the employees ; from the right he makes
their pockets. ---- His first measures, the most symbolic, have benefited the rich: relief
of taxation on capital income, planing the ISF, divided by five to " improve the daily "
of the 330,000 most wealthy French, and especially lower 25% of the corporate tax in five
years. ---- And the others then ? Before the summer, the government explained that the
reduction of social contributions would benefit employees: 250 euros more per year for one
or a smicard. At the beginning of the school year, a repeat: the abolition of
contributions on overtime should bring " 200 euros more per year " to said smicard. "
And at the same time, " Macron trimmed on the APL, family allowances and pensions, which
will increase by only 0.3%, seven times less than inflation !
Every tax cut or social contribution, undermines the building of the Secu and public
services. The smicard that will touch 450 euros more in one year, will lose much more in
parallel: the health insurance will reimburse less ; old-age insurance will reduce
pensions ; unemployment insurance will compensate less, there will be less access to
health, education, transport ...
Morality: work harder for ... the bourgeoisie earns more ! This fundamental scam is not
only macronistic, it is the result of a whole system: capitalism.
