Dear friends,
About a year ago, I travelled to Uganda to experience what I hoped would be my first Pride celebration on the African continent.
I had personally saved up, even passing on another important trip just so I could experience something historical and self-affirming.
Unfortunately, the event was cancelled because of the abuse of power of Uganda's so-called "Ethics Minister".
I was in Kampala with the LGBT+ community running helter-skelter as he ordered police to raid venues where LGBT+ people were known to gather.
In such a vibrant city, there was not a single safe space for us to gather. Every community member was a target.
This is why I'm so proud of Rainbow Riot's partnership with All Out to create a community centre where people can practice and perform music, give advice on health and safety issues, hold events and workshops, create art, and mobilise against discrimination.
Being from Nigeria, and living there, I can tell you firsthand how difficult it is to be an LGBT+ person in most African countries. Finding places to express who you are and meet people like you is a rare life-saving gift.
This will be the first LGBT+ community centre in Uganda – and it will be so much more than that.
It will affirm to the Ugandan LGBT+ community that they deserve dignity, respect, and that they are fine just the way they are.
Thanks for going All Out,
Ifeatu Nnaobi
