THE WEEK IN RIGHTS | SEPTEMBER 6, 2018 India's Supreme Court Strikes Down Sodomy Law

The Country's Supreme Court today struck down a colonial-era law criminalizing same-sex conduct as unconstitutional. Language in Section 377 of India’s penal code, a relic of British colonial rule, punishes “carnal intercourse against the order of nature” with 10 years to life in prison. Over 70 countries, including many in the British Commonwealth, still criminalize consensual same-sex relations. But striking down Section 377 is a momentous step that will resonate around the world in communities that are fighting for equality. READ MORE »
