Government security forces in the Democratic Republic of Congohave used live ammunition and teargas to disperse largely peaceful political opposition rallies this month.
It's part of a years-long attempt to control the electoral process as the Congolese government uses repression, violence, and corruption to extend its hold on power.
  • Protests have been ongoing since 2015 in the DR Congo, as President Kabila clings to power. His constitutionally mandated two-term limit ended in December 2016.
  • At least 300 people have been killed in largely peaceful protests by Congolese security forces since 2015 as the government cracks down on opposition figures and critics.
  • President Kabila has yet to file his candidacy in upcoming elections, a crucial first step. But much more needs to end bloodshed and ensure a peaceful democratic transition in the DR Congo.
